Fleet Bank/ Bank America - Erroneous Credit Reporting Complaint
My complaint is about the horrendous service and run-around I have been getting from Fleet Bank/ Bank America while attempting to have an erroneously reported, derogatory credit card account removed from my credit report. I am in the process of purchasing my first home and was made aware of this account while applying for my mortgage. Fleet Bank is alleging and reporting that I was 90+days late on a credit card 22 times from '99-'01, with the last 2 payments showing as current and the account closed and paid in 2001. I've never even had a Fleet Bank or Bank America credit card, so I called the Customer Service number supplied by the credit bureau and was told they could find no record under my name or SS#. My mortgage broker was able to get an account number for me, so I called back again and was told that they have no visual records and that I'll have to fax a request to the Credit Department to have this removed as they only take requests in writing, and that there is no one I can speak to regarding the matter.
After faxing in several times and receiving no response or acknowledgement, I proceeded to call their Credit Card services number and actually got through to someone who was actually helpful, only to find out that I have to get in touch with their Recovery Department, as it is being shown as a charged off account. After trying the number to the Recovery Department numerous times and being immediately transferred into a general voice mail from which I received no response, I finally got through to a very rude individual who looked up the account and advised me that this was no longer handled by them and was not being reported by them. They said the account had been closed and sold to a collection agency in 1997 (which doesn't show up on my credit report).
This being the case, I asked if they could please provide me with some type of documentation so I could have this removed from my credit report (after all, how could I be late 22 times from'99-'01 and then payoff an account with them, when their own records even indicate that this was a closed account which was supposedly sold in '97?). They replied that they would have to transfer me to their Sales Department (???). Not to my surprise, I got someone's voice mail. I have left two messages and have yet to hear back and have no way to get in direct contact with this department. This erroneous reporting is interfering with my ability to secure a mortgage without PMI due to the effect on my Credit Score and is delaying closing. I think it is absolutely outrageous that anyone should have to waste so much time and effort, and be subjected to such poor service from an any organization, especially one that is based on providing service. After talking with various parties, I have found out that I am not alone in the difficulty I am experiencing with Fleet Bank/Bank America in matters such as this.
