AT&T phone service

This is my home account. AT&T offered to provide phone service with local toll and long distance for about $50 a month, a pretty good deal. About 3 days later, I didn't have any phone service! I called AT&T. They said I'd only ordered long distance from their company.

I told the representative that that wasn't what I was told, and that I wanted to CANCEL the service. I contacted my former carrier, SBC and asked them to reinstate my phone and long distance service. However, on my next SBC bill (for phone service) I found that SBC was not my long distance carrier.

I contacted SBC by email to ask why the service hadn't been changed, and was told I had to contact them by phone. In the mean time, I spoke with AT&T over the phone about the bill and cancelling service. I was passed from one operator to another operator.

Interestingly, depending on what operator I was talking to I had 1.) complete phone service from AT&T, 2.) long distance and toll calling, or 3.) long distance only. I asked to speak with a manager and was connected to a very rude service representative who told me she couldn't do anything but help me pay my bill!

I contacted SBC again to reinstate long distance with them, but have not reinstated it. I work about 60 hours a week, and find it exasperating to try to find time to deal with all this. Any suggestions on how to get rid of AT&T? I'm ready to disconnect my phone!
