Alliance One

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have had the unfortunate experience in dealing with Alliance One. It is a long story as to how this came about, but suffice to say, there was a divorce, severance of matrimonial property from the divorce judgement, a hostile take over in our once family business that left me out of work for almost a year.

The default in payment was due to me having used my own credit card, (AMEX), to pay for certain business related activities. I was not reimbursed by the company for these purchases and was unable to make any payments without having a proper income.

Alliance One was the second collection agency used to try and collect the monies I owed...$2800.00. I have not been able to give much but would try and give at least $10.00 a month, just to show I was trying.

The agent I have had to deal with there has been very rude to me. He has called me a liar, told me I had an attitude, hung up on me, harassed me at work to no end, where my calls have had to be screened, harassed me at home (calling 2 or 3 times a day), called my daughter-in-law a liar when they would call when I wasn't home, and it goes on.

Today when I received another call, I receive a call daily, I told Mr.Ezard, that he knew what my plans were to pay off the debt. There is to be some money come through in just a few days, from my settlement, and I told him I would then pay the balance. He said that was not good enough. Tomorrow is the end of the month and it needs to paid by then.

I was not allowed to say anything more as he started yelling at me. I hung up at that point, but he called back. I answered and said I wanted to speak to his supervisor. He wouldn't allow me to do that and said the deal we had made was off and I would need to pay the whole amount now. (About $1000.00 was being taken off my account). I have heard this before and he would again call, try being nice and say if I paid the agreed amount then all would be fine. When I again asked to speak to his supervisor, he hung up on me.

Mr Ezard also informed me, when I asked why he was calling every day after I told him when I would be paying, he said it was the law that he could call up to three times in one day. This is harassment and I do not understand how companies are allowed to do this. I have even said I would allow him to speak to my lawyer so he knows for sure I am not trying to avoid him. He refused that and said all lawyers do are stall and he wanted the money right now.

I wish to take this further but am not aware of what steps I may take to report this to higher authorities but in being able to post this I can maybe make others aware of what they may be dealing with if dealing with this company and hope that some sort of law can be enacted to keep these people from harassing those of us who do honestly want to pay off our debts but just need the time. Someone needs to get across to companies like this that you get faster results with honey than you do with vinegar.

I have settled the debt I owed but it is now over 3 years later and I have received a letter from a different collection agency, stating that they bought the files of those who had balances oweing, and am told that I still owe another $800.00 plus. Upon phoning and talking to an employee of this company, I am told that the account was never marked settled, nor was it closed. I now understand the reasoning for my credit standing to be so bad. In order for this account to be rectified, I need to find and fax to this recent collection agency, the documentation of payment or go to a lawyer and get a sworn affadavit. I feel Alliance One owes me BIG TIME! They knew the account was settled, as I never heard from them again after paying the account, nor did they send me a letter alluding to the fact that it had been settled even though I had requested it. I did not pursue asking for the letter as I trusted all was done decently and in order, and of course wasn't.

I used to work for a phone company and I know the law regarding collections and the number of times they can call. As long as you answer at least once that is all they are allowed to call you a day and they can only call between 8 am and 9 pm. You may also write them and request they only communicate in writing and they have to abide by this or you can turn them into your state's Attorney General and they will contact them (or at least that is the law in Missouri).

I am having a similar issue occuring with my account that alliance one has obtained, we made a deal, $600 over a period of two months, instead of the $1100 total that I owed. Someone spent money in my account without my authorization, an account which only alliance one had the number to, in a city where alliance one holds an office, and now because I wish to make payments by check through the mail they say that deal is no longer good, who can we hold accountable for these sort of things???
