XtraCard Complaint October 7, 2004 Beneficial Health Card 777 Terrace Ave Hasbrouck Heights, NJ 07604 In March of 2002, we purchased a discount health membership card from Multi Market Sales & Service (MMSS); the sole authorized sales organization marketing the 1st-In-Health card. The purchase amount, paid by credit card, was for a 1st-In-Health family membership card and to become an MMSS independent sales representative.
There was a one time enrollment fee of $69.95 for the First-In-Health family membership card, and $155.95 for the MMSS agreement, with no additional annual or other fees (see the included sales literature). Originally, the cost of any discounted healthcare service was debited by 1st-In-Health via CC, and was to be paid directly to the healthcare provider by 1st-In-Health. On two separate occasions, upon returning to our healthcare provider for care, we learned that 1st-In-Health debited our CC without making payment. We contacted our CC provider, however we were told that more than 60 days had past.
After contacting the now XtraCard services, we were told that the XtraCard services had detached itself from the MMSS marketing organization, as well as the company that was handling 1st-In-Healths' credit card transactions. I was told that there was nothing that XtraCard could do to remedy the failed payments. So, we paid the healthcare provider the amount that was due. The really strange coincidence is that MMSS had the exact same address that 1st-In-Health had and that XtraCard has currently (see the included flyer). In early 2003, after enrolling in a new health insurance plan which my employer offered, we put our XtraCard away for emergency. In August, 2004, I was unable to locate my XtraCard and contacted customer service to have another card sent. I was told that our membership was cancelled due to non-payment. I asked for an explanation of how this could happen since we originally purchased what was a lifetime membership.
The customer service representative took my number and said that someone would call back. In October, 2004, after no return call from XtraCard services, I called customer service for information relating to my membership. I was told that I had to submit a payment of $20.00 to reinstate my membership, and that there would be a monthly services charge of $59.95.
I attempted to get a phone number for the corporate office to speak to someone; however, the customer service representative disconnected the line. I immediately called back, and asked the customer service representative for the phone number to the corporate headquarters, which she refused to give. I was asked my name, to which I replied, and was told that I would need to send any complaints via letter to the company, which has been mailed. Because we enrolled under a membership that was to not have any additional fees, we feel as though we have been defrauded. We would like to have our cards replaced, and our membership reinstated for five years. This should give us enough time to determine if we will keep the membership active. If after that time we decide to remain active members, we will agree to pay the then current fees. We believe that this is a reasonable request, since our original purchase was for a lifetime membership. Sincerely Jesse L.
