Deceased Parents account on Daughter's Credit History
RE: Deceased Parents account on Daughter's Credit History
I recently was part of a massive lay off where I worked. And in my job hunt was recently denied a job. The Temp agency who handled the hiring for the company that I applied for a job, did a mandatory credit check. T
o my surprise I was told the job denial was for 2 accounts on my credit report. The one was Sears, the other Discover. I was only an authorized user to sign for my mother, who no longer could write [due to her illness] a legible signature. My father never signed the credit cards . . . leaving it all to my mom. They both passed away in 1998 / 4 months apart from each other. The attorney that handled their estate advised that sending their death certificates to the companies would take care of it all & I was not responsible for the accounts. I never received a credit card or statement with my name including parents account number. I never used the cards after their deaths . . . only before their deaths when my parents were in need of an item from Sears. In fact, I may have sent the cards back to the companies or destroyed them. I had fallen into debt from taking care of my mother during her illness. I recently had to file for bankruptcy, which was discharged. I questioned the attorney if I should include my parents accounts since I was authorized to sign. She said "NO", that I was not responsible for them. I disputed all 3 Credit Data Services for having the accounts on my history. I now received 1 report back stating that Sears: remains on the report. I don't think it is fair that someone who doesn't even have their name on the account should have the information cause injury to someone finding a job. The denial of a job could cause another bankruptcy or even possibly being homeless. I am contacting the estate attorney to get more advise on what to do about correcting this information. I do believe my parents got their Discover card through Sears. I am warning people to look into their credit history. I never thought mistakes like this would happen to my history. Thanks RMP FL
