San Jose Water Co. Problem

Complaint is in regard to the San Jose. Water Co.'s handling of a water problem. On receipt of a water bill for one month for 241.87, (last month's was 70.00), I contacted the water co. and asked them to have the meter rechecked. This was done, (but not without a debate), then they did an Audit of the entire house and found the culprit to be a toilet in a 1/2 bath.

The leak was to the tune of 22.5 gal per hour. I immediately called the plummer, he could not get replacement parts and recommended replacementof toilet, I gave permission to buy and install a new toilet immediately.

He did this the next day. Then in rolled a letter, unsigned, from San Jose Water Co. ordering me to make repairs within seven working days. When I called and asked what the directive implied were they going to help me or what were they going to do?.... they referred me to the S.C. Water Dept. at 265-2600. In talking to that gentleman he said only certain toilets qualified for a rebate and that SJ.Water Co should have so informed me at time of discovery of leak.

Results? I paid a bill for water at 241.87 plus 495.00=$736.87 for a new toilet with no one accountable other than me, the consumer. Then to make matters worse, SJWater Co. included a raise in costs they were passing on with this bill. Do I have any recourse? I am a Senior and only two people occupy this house.
