Wells Fargo Banking Practices
My complaint deals with how Wells Fargo charges fees and handles deposits. I was a First Interstate Bank customer for many years until Wells Fargo took over First Interstate. As a First Interstate customer, I had free lifetime checking. Wells Fargo began charging First Interstate customers like me a monthly bank checking fee until a class action suit was threatened. Wells Fargo backed off and reimbursed those of us who had been charged fees. Recently, I moved to Georgia and I have been trying to close my checking account. Wells Fargo requires that the balance on the account be zero, or they charge the customer a reimbursement fee to withdrawn their own money. I deposited a check for $1275 to cover all remaining checks and debits on my checking account on 10/12/04. Wells Fargo placed a hold on the check because they said there were insufficient funds to cover the check at the time of their enquiry. No enquiry was ever made. The check was written on an account I have with Golden One Credit.
Golden One does not respond to telephone enquiries about a customers balance for obvious security reasons. I therefore placed a stop payment on the check and deposited $1,275 in hard cash on 10/15/04. Wells Fargo has held the cash deposit for 48 hours and charged me overdraft fees totaling $66 as of 10/18/04. I raised hell with them, and they have backed out the overdraft fees. If you are considering opening an account with Wells Fargo, be advised to read the numerous complaints former customers have submitted to Complaints.com. Wells Fargo Bank has a bad reputation. They hold hard cash deposits and then they want to charge overdraft fees. I will never do business with them again. C.
