HSBC Credit Card Complaint

I have been holding a credit card with HSBC for a long time.

On 27 Oct 04, I contacted the customer care for asking about my balance so that I can clear it in cash and I was told that the balance is Rs 5442.50 . I cleared the same on 27 Oct 04 and subsequently placed a request for cancellation of my credit card. I was told that it would take 2-3 days to get the card cancelled.

I was suspicious as when I asked why there is so much delay in cancelling the card, the customer care said that the procedure has been changed . Inspite of 01 week having passed, when I got no response from the cards division , I sent a fax on 04 Nov 04 to the Country Manager and also cut the card into 4 pieces and dropped it in the drop box at the branc oat M G Road Mumbai.

To my surprise , I find that the company on the 02 Nov 04 despatched a new statement to me giving me a charge for

my add on card , Service Tax , Late Payment Fee and Some other finance charges.

I have reported the case to the Reserve Bank of India.

Can anyone suggest me how to take action against the erring bank. Till today noone has responded me and I do not understand that when I have cancelled my Main card and placed a request for the same, howcome they they can charge me for the add on card.

When I asked the customer care on 27 Oct , they told me that mt total pending payment as on 27 Oct 04 was Rs 5442.50 which would also have included any late payment fee as the last day for payment is 20 Oct 04 as per my billing cycle.

HSBC CREDIT CARD – FRAUD AND CHEATING

I was holding a silver credit card of HSBC bank for many years. This card was issued to me stating that it is ‘FREE FOR LIFE’ and there are no joining fee or Annual fee or any other hidden fee at any point of time.

True to that, I was not charged any fees for the past many years UNTIL on 13th April 2010, they charged Rs. 700/- plus service charges towards annual fee plus Rs. 350 plus service charges towards annual fee of one add on card.

I sent an email requesting them to waive off the annual fees to customer care department in their email id info AT hsbc.co.in on 14th April and I got a reply mentioning that there is no FREE FOR LIFE credit card and that there was some promotional campaign going on at that time, which is not there currently and I should pay the annual fees as above.

I wrote again saying that I was not informed of any promotional campaign earlier and also I was not informed of closing of any promotional campaign. I requested them to cancel the card immediately. They responded saying I have to pay the annual fee as above and then can take up request for cancellation through different channel, by writing to their office address or talking to phone banking.

I do not intend to make the above payment as I feel cheated by HSBC by giving false information and their deliberate intention was to cheat.

My questions are

1. Why the annual fee all of a sudden on a card promised to be FREE FOR LIFE?

2. Why the annual fee or joining fee were not charged in the past many years?

3. Why was I not informed of the promotional campaign to waive annual or joining fee at the time of taking the card? What are the details of the campaign?

4. Why was I not informed of the closing of the so called promotional campaign, if at all it were there?

5. Why was I not given an option to cancel the card before levying annual fees?

6. Why was I not informed prior to charging Annual fee.

7. My calendar cycle was from 14th to 13th of any calendar month. Why was the annual fee charged on 13th of April, which prevented me to cancel the card prior to charging the annual fee, as it was charged on the last day of the cycle.

8. Why was there no mention of the period for which annual fees are charged?

9. I know of one instance of such levy of annual charges and on request, the same was waived off on 15th April 2010, stating that the fee is waived due to some promotional campaign going on now. That means there is some promotional campaign going on now. Why was that promotional campaign benefits not extended to my card. Why this double standards of HSBC offering promotional benefits only to a few. In what way am I different from those?

10. Where can I take legal recourse and what are the legal remedial courses available to me from this daylight robbery.

I am tired of not getting the statements for the past 10 months. I don’t know what the real issue is. Every time I have to wait for an executive of yours who calls me up to check whether I have made the payment or no.

Recently I got a call last week and the gentlemen informed me that I need to make an immediate payment towards my account. Please explain when you say “Immediate payment” HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSE TO PAY WHEN I HAVENT EVEN RECED MY STATEMENT. On top of that when I the executive is suppose to collect the money from me…….HE DOES NOT TURN UP!

I am really pissed as I left all my work on Thursday 22nd May 2008 & wasted my time coz your statement did not reach me, nor did your executive.

And now the best part is because your person did not turn up am charged with a “LATE FEE”. To top it all I also learned that I have been charged with LATE FEE all throughout my previous payment.

What kind of service should I expect from HSBC BANK. I am sure this would not change but I still thought that this will atleast reach you guys.

My card number is -4384599936160577

I want all my LATE FEE which HSBC has charged to be reversed due to which I still feel so stressed out daily.

Hope you have a good solution to fix this up.

Sub: Billing Discrepancy

Ref: Card No. 5548 3700 0848 1033

Dear Sir,

I am holding captioned HSBC Credit Card since more than a decade and the last one was issued in December’ 2005. At that time, it was offered to me as a life time card for which no annual fee would be charged.

I was surprised to receive my bill statement for the period 22/11/07 to 21/12/07, in which I found annual fee was charged. Immediately on receipt of that statement, I contacted your Kolkata No. 2243-8686 and explained the discrepancy to the Lady Officer who came on the line. I was assured that the error would be rectified in the next statement. However, I am astonished to find from the statement for the period 22/12/07 to 21/1/08 that the mistake was not only un-rectified but late payment charge has also been debited, making the total payment due as Rs.1,235.96/-.

I am completely disgusted with the service rendered by the Credit Card Department of your Bank. I am holding quite a few numbers of credit cards from different banks but such casual approach of ignoring the sensitivity of an old card holder who had never defaulted in making timely payment; has never been experienced from any other bank.

I want to discontinue association and hence there is no question of making payment of annual fee, late payment charge and service charges accrued on that amount. I am returning the credit card after defacing and cutting by separate mail.

Thanking you,
