ConsumerInfo.com -- Ugly scam
ConsumerInfo.com -- I joined at the monthly rate of $8.95. It seemed like a good service at a reasonable price. I enjoyed being able to see my credit info at the push of a button and the possibility of responding to creditors and credit companies should the need arise. After 4 months of checking it out I decided I didn't really need it, that it didn't provide services I would use enough to warrant the $8.95/mo. So I followed their directions to cancel. I sent an email to the address they designated and called the 800 number just to make sure. On the call line the voice said that if I'd already sent an email to cancel I didn't need to follow up w/ a phone call -- all would be well, my membership would be cancelled. Nevertheless, I kept an eye on my bank account just to make sure. It's now three months later and I just noticed another charge. That's plenty of time to get my service cancelled. So I called the number they were smart enough to leave on the bank statement. The puppet on the other end said they had not received my email (SURPRISE!) and could do nothing about the charges prior to this last one, but would refund the most recent charge. This is exactly the type of business I feared it might be, and exactly the response I thought they would give ("we didn't get your email"). In order to get the other monies refunded I would have to get a copy of the bank statement showing the charge, plus a copy of the email I sent, plus a copy of a photo ID. Then fax it to them. On my dime. It's such a powerless feeling. And so incredibly frustrating. Please steer clear of consumerinfo.com, and spread the word.
