Delta Airlines "Barevement/Immenent Death" Fare
Delta Airlines 800-221-1212
On March 24, 2004 I had to make a last minute decision to fly to Philadelphia from Florida to try & visit my suddenly ill grandfather before his major surgery in the morning. I called Delta airlines and asked for Round Trip, Open End ticket for an imminent death in my family. (That works the same way the Bereavement fare works only the death must occur within 7 days) I was told it would cost $1200 normally (for myself & my daughter) but the discount brought that to $620ish. I said I wasn't sure of any funeral attendance so my return date was unknown.
She said I just need to call and schedule a flight home as soon as I found that information & they would hold a reservation for me for now so I can compare other airline fares. I called US Airlines and they offered the same for $40 more and NO open end ticket. I would have to reschedule my flight home if my date had to change. Of course I went with Delta for the convenience of an Open End ticket (plus they were $40 less) Because my choices were VERY limited, I choose Delta. I gave them my credit card info over the telephone and the gentleman I spoke to said he would email me my flight information, then he said he couldn't do this over the phone, I would have to take my credit card to the counter at the airport so they can confirm my identity.
I assumed he couldn't email me anything so I took my flight info verbally. When I arrived at the airport, with literally minutes to spare, I was notified I had a one way ticket!!! Because they were my only option left at the time I had to just go to see my grandfather and deal with this mess later because I thought there was a mistake but had NO TIME to argue, only cry. I made it to my destination 1am & was able to visit my grandfather before his morning surgery (thanks to the ICU Nurse who "snuck" me in so late at night...I could never repay her for that) Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away after 9 hours of heart surgery due to a staph infection in his heart.
After having to deal with the sudden death of my grandfather, I called Delta Airlines to try & figure out what happened with my round trip ticket. I was told there was a miscommunication. When I asked "How does one 'miscommunicate' round trip, open end with One way"? I got the "I can't answer that" routine. But they could fly me home for the Bereavement fare of $300 per person. That put my expense back up to $1200!! Where was my bereavement/imminent death discount? If I didn't have money from my tax return I wouldn't have even made it there to say good bye!!! One can fly to Hawaii for that amount of money!!! I just went around and around!!! I had to borrow money from my sister to get home. I only paid $300 for myself & my daughter to fly home on a Sunday!!!! I should have paid that price in the first place!
Home was a trip from hell, too!!! My flight from Phila to Cincinnati was late causing me to miss my connecting flight & the attitude I received from ALL the Delta employees made me curse at them. I was basically told that I was "stupid for taking my" 3 year old "daughter to the potty when my flight came in late" & "I should have known how to read a map better to find my location of departure." I have never been in that particular airport and was totally lost in the first place. They offered me $7 for me and my daughter to eat because the next flight wasn't until early evening. I finally stooped to their level by telling them they can stick their worthless food vouchers where the sun don't shine. I have never been treated like the way I was and that takes alot to make me as angry as I was (& I'm from Philly were everyone has a bad attitude all the time) THEN my luggage was lost!!! I flipped & started to cry because all my papop memorabilia was in there & I was ripped off so badly. I can only wish the same stress & devastation upon them. I am trying to tell my story of deceit by the bigwig airline to anyone willing to listen or read.
My daughter received a "Delta Airlines Teddy Bear" a few weeks ago with an apology letter and I received 2 $100 vouchers to use towards my next Delta flight. I just want my money for a portion of it back since vouchers don't pay the bills & I never want to set foot in a Delta Airlines plane ever again. I'll send them their vouchers & Teddy Bear back for a refund of AT LEAST 1/2 WHAT I PAID ALLTOGETHER ($940ish) Delta States "We have a dedicated, trained Customer Care staff to answer your inquiries." Yet, when I called I was rudely spoken to & insulted by them insinuating I misheard them in relaying the details of my flight. They do not hold themselves responsible when THEIR employees make mistakes & mislead customers to think they're getting what they are not! I wasn't even offered to upgrade my One Way ticket to a round trip. I wasn't in the proper state of mind to ask either.
When I called my bank to try and reverse the charges on my Visa card, she went through the same exact situation I went through only she was offered a flight home. Visa said because I signed the receipt at the airport that was like my 'OK' on the situation therefore they will not refund any money back to me. It's all about the mighty buck!!!! It's been 2 months since this incident & it aggravates me everyday when I think about it. I do not treat my customers like the way I was treated & if I quote them wrong I do not make them pay for my mistake!!! I just emailed them & told them AGAIN how I feel & how much I HATE THEM & how I'm still feeling the effects of their ripping me off even 2 months later.
Thank You

It seems that Delta no longer offers barevement discounts if you are flying in the US. What a shame that they will assist you if you are flying internationally, but not if you are in the states!
