AT&T Phone Service - AT&T has misteriously opened up an account, wont close it, and are sending out Statements

AT&T Phone Service

One year ago, I moved, and closed my account with the phone companies. Suddenly, I receive a Statement from AT&T with my old phone number, old address, and a zero balance. When I called AT&T to check on the status of the account, one department said to me that it was closed, but he would transfer me to the billing department to verify the closure of the account.

When the billing department came on line, the agent said: No the account is not closed. I asked the agent to close it. She said: It was against her regulations to do so. She instructed me to contact my old local carrier to have them contact AT&T and have them close the account for me. In contacting the old local carrier, they showed the account to be closed, and where not able to access it.

They instructed me to contact AT&T until I could get ahold of a supervisor to close the account. AT&T would not let me get that far as to speak with a supervisor. Instead: AT&T kept trying to sell me on opening up an account with AT&T.

My complaint is: AT&T has misteriously opened up an account, wont close it, and are sending out Statements. This is wrong, to say the least. (It appears to me that AT&T is taking old customer accounts, re-opening them, and sending out Statements to get the old customer to call back for an inquiry. Once the old customer calls back, AT&T tries to open up an account with them on their current phone numbers).

There should be something illegal about this?

Sincerely,

Robin C
