Divorce - Responsibility for Payment of Visa credit card
I was married for three (3) years to a very controlling and abusive man and finally got the courage to leave him.
He was served with divorce papers several weeks ago. When I first married him he presented me with a platinum Visa card in my name. I found out that he was the primary card holder, but had added me to the account as an "authorized signer". I had my own credit cards but he wanted me to use the card he gave me. I returned the card to him just before moving out of the house.
I just received a new card in my name forwarded to my new address with a different account number. I called the company to let them know that I had not authorized such a card. It seems that after I left, my husband called the credit card company, led them to believe that I was still living there, and opened up a new account in my name. He also transferred all the debt from the old account to it and opened another new account in his name only which now has a zero balance.
I informed them of what is going on and requested that my name be taken off the account. Is there anything else I should do to protect myself?
