My 2001 Ford Taurus needed to be replaced after 45,000 miles. That is only 9,000 miles after the warranty expired.

A cost of $3,000. I called Ford in Dearborn, they said, so sorry but it was out of warranty and nothing they could do for me.

They acted surprised this happened and then I found out this is a common failure and they surely knew of it. I asked them to at least split the bill, they refused. Needless to say I have bought my LAST Ford product.
