David's Bridal, Costa Mesa, CA - tried to pass off the "try-on" wedding dress as new

David's Bridal - They tried to pass off the "try-on" wedding dress as new. I ordered a wedding dress from David's Bridal in Costa Mesa, CA on February 15, 2004. Was told the dress would take 12 weeks to make and they would call me when it came in. Barely four weeks later (on March 19th) I received a call that the dress was ready. I thought that was strange because the sales person told me that particular dress took 12 weeks to make, he was emphatic about it. I drove from Los Angeles, down to Orange County on a Monday night (they also prefer one pick the dress up during the week) to pick up the dress. The sales girl gave me the dress and I asked about alterations. Was told I could call and make an appointment for alterations or I could take it to alterations right then and there. It was late so I decided to take it home and I would call later. When I got the dress home I decided to try it on. It's then that I noticed that there was a chuck of material missing from the zipper area. Then I noticed that beads were missing from the dress and it was dirty. Also, it was torn from the bottom and had hair stuck to the bottom of the dress. Seems they gave me the dress everyone tries on and tried to pass it off as new. I paid $1,100.00 for a new dress not a used one. I was outraged and so was my fiance. We took the dress back the next day. Unfortunately my fiance saw the dress before the wedding and I wanted it to be a surprise so that made me very angry. He, however, also noticed that the dress was stained. He got them to order me a new dress. When I do get this dress I will make sure that it is new and inspect it thoroughly before I leave the store.

I'm sorry that this happened to you! Unfortunately David's usually does give dresses that have already been worn for the most part because they are an off the rack store. Even when they "order you one" it usually comes from another store that had it in stock (but either way it has still be worn). I know this because I used to work for one of the Davids stores in Orange County for 2 years. When I would try to order my brides new dresses from the warehouse I would get in trouble and on one occasion written up. I think there policy on dresses it ridiculous because a bride deserves a new dress. Once again I am sorry this happened to you and would be interested to see how this works out for you. Please keep us posted!

P.S. Congrats on your wedding! :-)
