Quality Inn & Suites, Middleburg Heights, OH

I had reserved a room at the Radisson Cleveland Airport to stay in while visiting nearby Baldwin-Wallace College. This stay was to take place on the evening of July 29, 2004. Upon arrival to the area, we could not find the business. We decided to instead visit the college first and look for the business later. After driving hopelessly up and down Engle Road, we called the hotel and they answered as "Quality Inn and Suites". After the confusion caused by the AAA book listing it incorrectly (as the hotel had only changed names two months ago) we pulled into the parking lot. We checked in with no problem and then proceeded to our room. Upon entry, we were shocked at the state of the room. The carpet was soiled and stained. The sheets on the beds were clean, but they looked old. A yellowed and disgusting looking alarm clock that looked to be from 1988 or so was on the nightstand. The climate control system was blowing out warm air, and the dial was ancient and difficult to change. The bathroom had a ceiling that was rotting away, and there were a few flies in the room. The furniture such as the desk and TV stand were scratched, greasy, and old. While going upstairs after our check in, the elevator to the far left felt shaky. The only thing in the room that looked to be in good shape was the Bible in the nightstand drawer. We went to the front desk and told the man that we were unhappy with the room and wanted a refund. He was not symphathetic at all but said that he had taken it off the card. I will know if he was serious for sure in a few weeks when the bill comes. Since we were going to Wooster the next day anyway, we drove there and found an AmeriHost Inn, which was wonderful. AmeriHost was clean, friendly, and looked almost new--and it was built in 1995. I had no complaints about AmeriHost and would stay there again if I ever visit Wooster. The AAA book listed the Quality Inn (or Radisson, as they listed it) as a three star hotel. A web search revealed the property to be built in 1978 and remodeled in 1998. The lobby looked to be remodeled in 1998, but the room had 1978 written all over it. This would not have been a place I would have stayed ten years ago based on the condition. One online review gave it four stars--but I punched it in as Radisson. When I got home on the 30th, I looked it up as Quality Inn and found much lower ratings. I am not sure if a few rooms were updated, but I will probably never stay in a Quality Inn.
