We moved into our new home in October 2000. We purchased a Kitchen Aid Glass natural gas cooktop, that the developer installed. Last night we heard a loud POP in the kitchen and went in to see that the glass had shattered, sending fragments all over the entire kitchen. We called KitchenAid and were given several repair companies names.
They all told us that the glass alone will cost over $300 and with labor it can possibly double that amount including removing the broken pieces. They all said we were better off buying a new cooktop. We shopped all day today and were told that there are no cooktops manufactured that will fit the 28" x 19" opening in our granite!
And there is hardly a 1/2" to spare even if we had the granite opening cut. The cabinet is only 28 1/2" wide. We have been told that the only thing that could have caused this break is a "manufacturers defect" and that we were not the only ones that have had this problem. As a result we now can not use our kitchen to cook, and we expect that Kitchen Aid can come to our "aid" ASAP. But according to them - buyer beware!! They are not offering any help whatsoever. And we can not even replace it as there are no cooktops manufactured that will replace this one's size. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Thank you, Peter B

My mom has the same kitchen aid convection oven with a glass cooktop that I do. About a year or two ago, her cooktop shattered. Mine just shattered today (hence, I stumbled upon your complaint via an internet search). Neither my mother nor I were using the cooktop in a manner that was out of the ordinary. I just turned on my burner to make a grilled cheese for my daughter's lunch and it just SHATTERED! I am really beginning to wonder if there is a problem with their design/materials. My mom paid $715 to have her glass replaced (after being given an estimate of $200 by the repair person). I'm considering purchasing a new oven/cooktop unit- AND NOT KITCHENAID!
