The National Hotel, Miami, Florida
Hello,
My wife and I were married in January of 2004 and took a cruise departing from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. We planned to spend two nights in Miami prior to our departure. Our travel agent booked two nights (January 21st and 22nd) for us at The National Hotel in Miami. As we decided to stay at another hotel, I contacted the hotel on January 21st at approximately 6:15 a.m. pacific time to cancel the reservation. I was told that I would be charged one night's accommodations because the hotel had a 72-hour cancellation fee.
I advised them that I was never informed by my travel agent or the hotel that there was such a policy. In addition, I was told by my travel agent that the room was not guaranteed with my credit card. Despite my protest, the hotel charged my credit card for $361.60.
Upon our return from our honeymoon, I contacted my travel agent who in turn contacted the hotel in attempt to obtain a credit, but the hotel refused.
I feel that I should not have been charged for this. I was not made aware by the hotel or my agent that the hotel had a 72-hour cancellation policy nor did I ever authorize the hotel to charge my account. I would be more understanding of the charge if I knew of the policy and if we were traveling during a peak season. However, there were many vacancies in Miami at that time including at The National Hotel. It is not as if they turned down another guest because we had a reservation and they were saving a room for us. I called the hotel when we were in town and they told me they had "plenty of available rooms including rooms with ocean views."
I feel this hotel is taking advantage of people and I have told several people this story who travel to Miami on a regular basis for business and pleasure. Unless the hotel makes an attempt to rectify the situation, I will continue to tell people about how they treated me.
Sincerely, George F
