To Complaints.com This is a complaint against Stevenson Chevrolet of Golden, Colorado. I brought a vehicle to this dealership to find and correct a grinding or rubbing type noise that occurred when the vehicle was turned to the left and to the right. No noise when going straight forward. I told them that I thought the problem was a wheel bearing. The Service manager dismissed that idea saying that if it was a wheel bearing it would make noise going straight forward. I also told them that a mechanic friend of mine said it was the left side strut. He dismissed that too. He had two mechanics drive it and one said it was a drive axel and the other said it was the wheel bearing. Since the Service Manager said the bearing would also make noise going straight forward, I authorized them to check out the drive axel. They not only checked out the drive axel, but also replaced it saying after the fact, on the invoice, that it was binding. The new drive axel did not solve the problem. A drive axel is just a steel rod connecting to CV joints at each end. The axel touches nothing except the CV joints. If the axel was binding it would have been binding at the CV joints. Nothing was said about the condition of the CV joints. This axel could have been checked out by operating the vehicle while on a lift and turning the steering wheel left and then right. If it had been binding it would have made noise at the CV joints. They replaced this part without informing me that they were going to do so. Since this didnt solve the noise problem they decided to look at the wheel bearing. The Service manager told me the mechanic said the bearing had rust on it. I asked the Service manager if the rust is what made it bad. The Service manager said he didnt know. The implication here is that the bearing was bad. Believing the bearing was bad I authorized them to replace it. Thinking back on this: Wheel bearings usually have grease on them. Worn out or otherwise, there is grease. It would be difficult for rust to form on the bearing. The rust was probably on the outside of the bearing hub. Anyway, the new bearing did not solve the noise problem. I expected to pay for labor to take the parts out, check them and re-install if not bad or put in a new part if it was. A competent mechanic, certified at that, should be able to look at a mechanical (non electrical) part and determine if it is bad. They went a head and put in new parts anyway. Now theyre into me for $356.00 for new parts I did not need. Neither part, they replaced, had anything to do with the noise and were causing no other problem. The next thing they suggested doing to get rid of the noise was to replace the strut or the cartridge in the strut. I initially suggested they look at the strut. Now, $356.00 later, theyre considering the strut. I told them I was tired of paying for con or incompetence, and would not let them do it unless they did it for free or reimbursed me for the parts I did not need. They would not do this and Mr. Stevenson, their employer, thinks they are honest and wont make good on it either. They just started pulling parts. Telling me theyre bad and replace them. They would have rebuilt the whole car if I hadnt stopped it. A few weeks later I took the vehicle to another auto repair shop and had them replace the cartridges in the struts (they say one should do both at the same time). Lo and behold, the noise was eliminated. Mr. Stevenson knows this and still isnt man enough to admit his people are either incompetent or lying con-artists. If the truth be known, he is one them, himself. They dont care if they rip off a customer now and then because the customer has little recourse. The so-called consumer protectors don't give a darn either. Losing a customer is no big deal with them, as there are thousands of new unsuspecting ones out there. Richard H.
