Citibank credit card

I used to be a citibank customer. I cancelled my credit card in October 2002. I did not have a problem with the card, but I was not using it so I cancelled the account. I received a written reply from citibank

confirming that the card was cancelled. Ten months later I started receiving monthly statements again. They claimed that I owed them twenty pounds ( sterling ) plus a bit of interest. This twenty pounds was the annual charge to insure the card against theft and fraud. Why would I insure a card that I killed ten months earlier ? The next month they increased the bill by another twenty pounds. This is the late payment charge. The bill keeps increasing every month as I refuse to pay it. I've written to them several times to explain the situation. Two of the replies I got said - ' we are sorry to hear you wish to cancel your account but we can confirm that this action has now been taken ' .

I spoke to somebody on the phone, and he sounded surprised when I told him that the account was closed. He offered to waive the late payment charges, but said I would have to pay the original twenty pounds, and then try to get a rebate. I'm not that stupid, and refused to pay.

Although my account has now been closed three times I still keep receiving monthly statements. In december 2003, my account was suspended. In january 2004, my credit limit was reduced because of the ' poor conduct of my account ' . I'm still not paying.

I'm glad that I kept the letter they sent me in 2002 confirming that the account was closed. I suggest that anyone else closing a credit card account keeps hold of the written proof. While searching the internet for info on citibank, I found a story of another citibank customer who cancelled his card, and five years later they started sending him bills again. Be warned. simon s
