Norwegian Cruise Lines - Sky
We recently returned from 7 day cruise on the Norwegian Cruise on the ship, Sky and want anyone who is considering a cruise on Norwegian to seriously reconsider!!!!!
This cruise was out 12th and have sailed on various lines with 1 other on Norwegian about 9 years ago and will tell you that this is definitely our LAST cruise on a very inept and unfriendly line.
The cabin accommodations were O.K., but had no idea who our cabin steward was or is, although the cabin well kept never made an attempt to introduce themselves which is normally a common occurrence on any other line. The overall service was belittling and wait times, plan on at least a 2 hour dinner in the main dining room(s) because service is very, very slow. And keep in mind that if you select to dine at one of the "other" restaurants on the ship (the other part of the "freestyle" experience, keep in mind you will pay between $10.00 to $20.00 per person each time [why do they fail to tell you that until you get on the ship]! As far as on board activities are concerned, they are few and far in between and everything seems to "shut down" at midnight with the exception of the casino. Good luck trying for a late nite snack....your only hope with any luck will be room service.
And if you are a bingo player on a cruise, get ready to pay between $30.00 to $60.00 per session with a chance of winning $175.00 bingo bucks the grand prize at the end of the cruise of $1000.00 (not sure where all the money goes, but certainly does NOT go back to the guests - although you could get $3000.00 if black out in 52 numbers....whoopeee!!!)
And remember you are BANNED from bringing liquor of any kind on board (be very careful, it will be confiscated and returned to you on your last nite of the cruise) and their prices for drinks are higher than any other cruise line we have sailed.
Regarding the dress code, there is not one...it is "ruled," no jeans or shorts in the dining room for dinner......liars! Every nite there were people with shorts, jeans, T-shirts and whatever, so if you have any regard for a particular style of dining, it was not there. We asked if there were rules, they did say, "oh, absolutely" but the only rules they had were only if in their own monetary interest.
The quality of the food was "fair" at best. The buffets were very second rate and we tended to stay away from them as much as possible.
Never did see much of the cruise staff and not really sure what they did. However, I will give credit where credit is due, and their shows were very good! The casino personnel were also polite and friendly.
If you plan on any shore excursion, plan them in advance and do not wait until you get on board. They seem to have very, very limited capabilities and everyone we tried for (the day we boarded), were sold out or canceled.
As far as the ship itself is concerned, you have only 1 deck that you can walk on and if you are looking for a deck chair, look again...there are none. If you're lucky, you can get a lounge chair by the pool...maybe (if you get there at 5:00 a.m. in the morning on a sailing day and hold on to it for dear life!!!
Our feelings are that this freestyle cruise concept just makes it easier for them and a lot less caring for the passenger. Remember, the tips are added to your room charge at the end of the cruise $10.00 per day per person (in very small type in your documents), so the staff will get their money....they couldn't care less. The movie theater, a group of chairs in a room off the library with a projection screen in case you are interested.
Bottom line, go for another line -- you will be very unhappy and disappointed with this one. We only wish we had done more research before we sailed. It sounded good in the beginning, but ended as a horrible experience.
One more thing, they "brag" about being a latitudes member (past passenger). Your benefits were 20% off drinks for a couple of hours in only one of the bars, 10% off in the spa and a pin, and I think a free bingo card for one of the sessions...that is what we received when we requested a possible upgrade.
