I ordered from BuyRite on 17th July 2003. I had been looking for a long time for the game Chrono Cross, and wanted a new copy. I also needed to find a site that shipped internationally. Then I found BuyRite - they had an awesome site with loads of stuff I wanted and would ship to the UK - about the only site that fitted what I needed.
The first problem was that they wanted $19.99 for shipping. This is a load of rubbish since under normal shipping a PS1 game should only cost about $5. I e-mailed them about the cost and no response. Not deterred, I decided to order the game anyway.
It then took over 14 days to arrive - which is shocking via Air Mail since it should take about 6. When it arrived I found out what had cost me so much - I was paying for Special Delivery via ParcelForce or something. Wow, wasn't that worth it! I was also paying for the thin cardboard envelop it came in, possibly the worst packaging I have ever seen for CDs. I was also puzzled, since that packaging surely couldn't contain a 2-disc PS1 game?
And then when I opened it, I found a thin paper wallet with the two CDs both in it, data-side to data-side, both terribly scratched. Wasn't this supposed to be a new product? I knew BuyRite dealt in second hand products, but they were in a separate section and Chrono Cross was in the brand new PS1 games section of the site. It said nowhere on the page about it being second hand.
Disappointed, I decided to start playing anyway, but about 12 hours into the game I had to stop since the disc was so scratched that it froze on a certain point. I e-mailed BuyRite about the product...and got no response. Undeterred I tried again...no response.
As an aside, while I was waiting for them to reply, I bought myself a brand new copy of Chrono Cross on eBay. It cost me less than their secondhand product, it only cost me about $7 shipping and came in 6 days.
Eventually I phoned them, at great reluctance and at quite a considerable cost since I live in England. Their phone system was terrible. Every option was useless, except for the most unlikely combination of buttons which took you through to a person. I was then told that if I returned my product to them they would replace it. I didn't list my other complaints, but was relieved I would get a working copy of the game I could sell on eBay or something.
So I sent them a letter along with the returned CDs on approximately 8th October 2003, detailing my grievances above and asking for the following in compensation:
1. At least a returned product, but ideally my money back since I had no use for another copy of the game (a problem they could have avoided by responding to my e-mail quickly and efficiently)
2. Compensation money for return shipping and phone calls, since they were because of BuyRite's negligence (a second-hand product; bad packaging; and not responding to e-mails).
It is now 28th January 2004 and I have not heard anything from them - not even a returned product. I have just e-mailed them asking where it is, but I am not expecting a response since they haven't responded to them previously. I am hoping posting on this web site will bring more to their attention, and will do all I can. I am also considering prosecuting them for effectively stealing my money and sending me a lower specification product than I bought (as well as being defective).
To resolve these issues BuyRite can still perform the two above, but I am really no longer interested in a returned product. Instead I want $50 to cover the product, shipping, return shipping and phone calls. Of course, if I have to phone them again, that amount will rise. I would also like an answer to the following questions:
1. Why did you send me a second-hand product instead of the new product listed on your site? 2. Why did you charge me $20 for an inferior method of postage? 3. Why did you pack the product so badly leading to damage? 4. Why did you not respond to my e-mails when my product was defective? 5. Why have you still not returned my product?
Thanks for listening,
Steve M
