GE Refrigerator with Bottom Freezer Storage - no handles shipped with refrigerator - high pitch pulsating whine coming from refrigerator

GE Refrigerator

We purchased a GE Refrigerator with Bottom Freezer Storage October 22, 2003. When the refg. was delivered on 10/29/03 there were no handles shipped with the refrigerator. We contacted the local dealer and they immediately ordered replacement handles.

After a week of waiting I called the corporate office in Louisville and they confirmed the order was in but they could not tell me when the handles would be shipped. Another week passed and when I called Louisville again I was told it would be another 4 to 5 weeks before they could ship the handles. Given the circumstances, they offered to exchange the refrigerator for another one out of stock and rather than wait another 5 weeks I accepted there offer.

The replacement was delivered on 11/25/03 and we immediately noticed a high pitched pulsating whine coming from the refrigerator. The original refrigerator had a similar sound but nothing compared to this sound. Called the service center and they sent a repair tech out 7 days later and as one might expect---the sound it is making is "normal".

Wrote a letter to Mr. James Campbell, President/CEO explaining the situation and long story short, we have now had a total of three technicians out with the same conclusion---the sound is "normal". I cannot consider a sound "normal" when it is loud enough to disrupt conversation and TV viewing in the next room. Nor can I consider it "normal" when you can hear the sound as you enter the front entrance of the house separated by a wall and 20 feet of space. I have offered to exchange the refrigerator for cheaper model with a different compressor and fan configuration but GE refuses to do anything since their expert technicians have deemed the noise "normal".

Adding insult to injury, during the 6 weeks we have owned this refrigerator, the handle has pulled off in the wifes hand on three occasions.

Word of caution after viewing the other complaints on this site---DO NOT BUY A GENERAL ELECTRIC PRODUCT.
