Buckeye Rural Electric Company - Electric Cooperative
Buckeye Rural Electric Company (REC) has their office in Gallopolis, Ohio. Unfortunately, they are the electric supplier for a large portion of Lawrence County, Ohio. We are frequently without electric service, as we were overnight last night, the coldest day of the year. Several Buckeye customers in the Sims Valley area were without electric from approximately 12:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. for no apparent reason. Buckeye does not respond when queried about these outages.
Additionally, once the electric came back on at 9:00 a.m., my electric in my home had to run for several hours just to warm my house back up because outside temperatures were so low. I think Buckeye REC should have to absorb this additional cost, which will show up on my daily usage.
Buckeye REC charges the highest rates of all of Ohio electric providers, but they are supposed to be a cooperative owned and operated by its members/users. I think it is high time that we, the owners/users, demand better service and lower costs for ourselves.

The co-operative put in new meters about 2 years ago and immediately caused our bills to raise $100 a month. This winter with all the cost add-on’s our electric bills are around 465.00 per month, compared to around 180 a month during the same period before the new meters were installed. I thought at first, that maybe I have had a line go to ground. I changed the line from meter to home. No change! Then I checked with neighbors and I then found theirs were just as high and they were pissed as I. We are now going a step further and contacting the Ohio PUCO of Ohio. We asked buckeye rural to please check out the complaint but received a smart answer, If you don't like it get another company. Well in the meantime we have contacted another electric company and they stated that if the PUCO would rule on it to allow their lines about 1/2 mile to our home they would be glad to serve our community. I have canvassed our neighbors and asked if they would sign a petition to sign on as new customers to Columbus and Southern Electric. I have had overwhelming interest to get away from Buckeye Rural Electric COOP. The electric is notorious for outages for days to weeks at a time in Gallia as well as Lawrence County.
