Milwaukee, WI 53222 (There was no e-mail address for the local store or U-Haul corporate.) I had rented a 17-foot truck to move on Dec. 11th & 12th. When I picked up the truck, the first thing that scared me was that it was a diesel. This was not the time of year to be using a diesel-powered vehicle (Milwaukee in the middle of December!) Anyway, I picked it up and the fuel gauge said it had 3/8 of a tank.

The move was local, so I only put around 50 miles on it.. Sunday (it was about 5 degrees outside) I drove it to the gas station to fill it up. I started filling it up, and stopped to check the fuel gauge. It hadn't moved. So I put more fuel in, checked it again. Still hadn't moved. (I didn't know how big the tank was.) So I called U-Haul and explained my situation, stating that I don't know how much more fuel to put in because the needle was stuck.

All they kept saying was "You need to bring it in on the level you picked it up at." Well, I didn't know what level it was at because the needle was stuck!! The guy hung up on me. WHAT!?!? I called back (with a few choice words for him) and he finally said "If you bring in your receipt we can work with you on that." Okay, fine. I ended up putting in about $56 worth of fuel in to it, and the needle still didn't move. So I started driving, and of course, I hit a few bumps in the road and the needle swung all the way over to "full".

I get to the store and show the guy my receipt, explain to him the needle finally moved, and he said "We don't reimburse for over-filling of the fuel tank." You jerk!! You just told me you would over the phone!! I was so pissed. I called the store back on Monday and spoke to the manager. She said the same thing, but that she would talk to her employees about their behavior. (Yeah right.) She sent me a $20 voucher in the mail good on any purchase at any U-Haul store.

Like I'm ever going to buy anything (or rent a truck) from them ever again!! The way I look at it, they owe me about $35 in fuel. The ironic part of this is, in their contract it says if you don't fill it up, they charge you an extra $2 a gallon to fill it up themselves. The diesel I put in (in Milwaukee) was $2.17 a gallon. Do the math. Oh well, what's done is done. I'm still out an extra $35. Jon W
