DirecTV advertises on their website a 100% digital signal producing surround sound if you have a home theater system. The only variable advertised is a surround sound system.

I had DirecTV come out and install a system at my home. There was no surround sound with my home theater system. The installer told me it was because the DirecTV receiver couldn't reproduce the digital signal allowing surround sound. So they are advertising a 100% digital signal and then installing equipment that cannot reproduce that digital signal.

My next step was to contact DirecTV. I spoke with Ivan in tech support who acknowledged the website was misleading and he was going to contact the web development team, but as for my specific case there was nothing he could do about it. He escalated my call onto the Retention Group as it's called.

I spoke with a woman named Stephanie who had a simple solution. All I had to do is go out and buy a digital capable receiver and DirecTV would credit my account. She gave me her employee number to use as verification when I called in with my new receiver to have it activated and my account credited. Fortunately, I'm not that trusting.

I called back a couple of days later on a hunch. I implied that I had bought the receiver as instructed and was needing my account credited. Of course, my hunch was correct. Not only was it a bogus employee number "Stephanie" had given me, but evidently her name wasn't even Stephanie.

Sincerely,

Jon
