Best Buy, Bel Air, Maryland 410-893-6101 Best Buy, Bel Air, Maryland 410-893-6101
Last February 9, 2004, my husband, my son and I were browsing in the Best Buy store in Bel Air, MD. Each of us looking at different things. I was looking at the country cds. At the end of the row was a best buy employee stocking the shelves.
As I was standing there looking at cd a man came down the isle and was looking at the cd behind me. He bumped into me and I moved down. Then he preceded to rub against and bump me 3 more times (each time I continued moving). Finally I said excuse me! The (so called) man turns to me and starts screaming and yelling profanities at me, he asks me what my problem is and tells me he is going to f.... me up and when he was done with that he was going to kill me! I continued looking at the cds and told him "I'm not afraid of you", then all of a sudden he punches me in the mouth. I yelled for someone to call the police, my husband comes around the corner after he heard me yell and saw blood gushing from my mouth and tackled the guy.
The employees and security of best buy let the guy walk out get into a waiting car which was running and sitting right in front of the exit door. My husband took down the tag number, the Bel Air, MD town police were called and they arrived about 20-30 minutes later. The police took my statement and told me I should have kept my mouth shut! Needless to say I was very upset. Still to this day no one from best buy has ever called or even come up to me while this was happening to see if I was ok. All of this was captured on security video.
After about 2 weeks I hadn't heard anything from the police I called them and after leaving about 3 messages over 3 days the police finally called me back. When I asked what was going on he told me it was not a top priority and the chances of them catching this guy were slim and none. I then was upset, I was crying, scared and made this known to the police. He then said that I needed to seek professional help.
After about 4-5 months he said he thinks he found the guy but nothing would be done unless I could pick him out in a line up. Well that is where it stands right now. Like I said in the beginning I never looked the guy right in the face. The only thing I could tell you is that he was taller than I am and he was a black man. I would never be able to pick him out.
I no longer feel safe in my own town and have no trust in the Town Police as well as in Best Buy or any other store. I am always looking over my shoulder and am afraid to say anything to anybody. I did call best buy to try and talk to someone and they told me their policy is to not get involved! That means it is not a safe store to shop in/ We cannot control who comes in their stores nor can they but at least they need to deal with a problem with a magnitude such as this/ I am also disappointed in the police dept, there is video that would show his face and I cannot believe that they did not pursue that as well. I personally think a lawsuit is in order for this. You were injured in their store and they did nothing to protect you.
