Best Buy USB Cables Best Buy USB Cables
Best Buy Reno, Nevada After unpacking a new printer purchased for a family member, I was frustrated to learn that when I unpacked the printer, there were NO cables packaged with the device. It seems that today, many printers and other devices no longer come with pre-packaged USB cables, at least not the printers sold at Best Buy. This is not an oversight, but a practice that is both frustrating and costly to the consumer. A consumer device should be packaged with all of the necessary small components that will enable its operation. The same practice carried further would require consumers to purchase power cabling as well, or the plastic buttons of the keyboard, and maybe individual hard disk platters when the purchased a hard disk. I went back to Best Buy to purchase the missing USB cable and discovered the reason for leaving the USB cables out of the printer package; high price. This is not a high price because USB and other cabling is expensive to produce. It isn't. This is a high price that gouges the consumer for profit. However the business attempts to justify it, it is not a consumer fair practice to charge over 900-1000% markup above cost for a product that should be packaged with the primary product. After realizing that I was about to be taken for $25 over cost of a $2 cable, I spoke to the area area manager about the extremely high price of their computer cabling. I asked very clearly that he allow me to make a formal complaint about the business practice of reselling computer cabling at ridiculous markup cost and sticking it to the consumer by not packaging the cabling with the device. He said there was no formal process in place by which I could make a complaint other than to call 1-888-BestBuy and make one myself. At checkout I discovered, that without mentioning it to me, they sold me the cable, the least expensive in the store, priced at $24.95, at cost: a whopping $2.60. I thanked the cashier for selling me the cable at cost. I will not return to a Best Buy store unless they stop jerking their customers around. I implore other customers not to accept the outlandish practices that so many retail business are now putting in place. If it is not packaged with your product, buy your cabling and other accessories online. You will pay a quarter or fifth of what the reseller is charging. Tell the reseller that you don't appreciate being screwed out of an extra $30. Tell the retailer that their practices are losing them business. Tell them you won't return. The printer, and NOT cable that connects it, is an accessory. Don't let the consumer marketplace turn necessities into 'accessories.'
