unsubstantiated complaint

Hello, My name is Brendan Peck and i am writing on behalf of Big City Moving Company. I am the owner and president of the company. We discovered that there was a complaint about our company posted on your site. It appears to have been up for almost two years. The link to this complaint is: http://www.complaints.com/directory/2004/august/27/9.htm I read this complaint and recall this situation in detail. The woman making the claim has absolutely no reason to be making such a claim. We did arrive to the job a little late due to an earlier scheduled job.

The customer was made aware that it was entirely possible and very likely that we would arrive later than the scheduled time. We tell our customers this because there is no formula to to to determine the exact duration of any job. Our arrival times are estimated, much like the cable or telephone company. However we are always on time for the first job of the day and typically never more than an hour late if at all to any jobs following the first. This customer did complain about our two hour minimum charge. She did not understand what travel charges were either. In an effort to satisfy the customer, I returned $100 to her. Making the total for her move $99. Apparantly it was too late, this complaint had already been filed. I tried contacting the customer by email and phone and left several messages for her. She never respoonded to any of my attempts to reach her. This complaint has and continues to tarnish our otherwise stellar reputation. You can do your research and try to find another complaint against this company and you willcome up empty handed. I beleive it is only right that this unsubstantiated, libelous claim be removed from your site immediately. Until it is, my business, employee's and family continue to suffer unjustly. Please respond letting me know waht you intend to do about this. Thank you, Brendan Peck

Big City Moving Co. / Boston in-town move

Big City Moving Company

14 Humboldt St

Waltham

MA 02452 617 821 2274 (Brendan Peck - Owner & President) detailed complaint: After seeing an ad on Craigslist.com (8/23), I asked for a quote for an in-town move. The quote given to me was $99 / hour for two men. I asked if this included gas, truck rental and travel. The representative I spoke to said yes, and that this was a flat rate. Thinking this was a reasonable rate, I scheduled for a 1pm move last Weds (8/25). First of all, the movers did not arrive until 3.30pm, as their previous job took longer than they expected. Secondly, at the end of the move, which took only an hour, I was suddenly told that there was a 2 hour minimum for their service, and that I had to pay another $30 for travel. I flatly refused, as this 2 hour minimum was not mentioned in the reservation contract, nor in the phone conversation I have had the day before. The movers then called the company owner.

After speaking with him myself, he only offered to drop the travel charges, but not the extra charge for the 2 hour minimum, saying that it was "the company policy." I was in the end charged $199 instead of $99. As a broke fresh college grad who is still dependent on my parents, I really don't want to spend anymore than I have to. Is there anyway I can get this $100 back? Is this even legal if it wasn't stated in the reservation? I will include the full document below:- Chinyan, First, let us start by saying thank you for choosing our service. We will be happy to help make your move a hassle-free success.

We have your move confirmed for Wednesday, August 25th @ 1pm. Please be aware that arrival times are estimated, as there is no formula to determine the exact duration of jobs scheduled prior to yours. We will be providing you with a 15ft truck, furniture pads, stretch wrap and the man power necessary to complete the job safely. We have quoted you a price of $99/hr for two men. This rate is based on the information you have provided to us. You can be confident that everything will be handled with the utmost care. In addition, rest assured that all of your valuables will be wrapped and secured prior to them being moved for extra protection. Please note that it is your responsibility to take all the necessary measurements needed to insure that all larger sized objects will fit through any possible obstacles, i.e.: doorways, hallways, staircases etc.(check out the dimensions at your new address). This is particularly important if any furniture was assembled in your home. We are NOT responsible for any objects that will simply not fit into the space allotted. Any cancellations or scheduling changes made less than 48 hours in advance are subject to a $100.00 fee. Further note that gratuities ARE NOT required, but are greatly appreciated. Allow this document to act as a confirmation of our work order for your move. Kindly review this letter to verify that the information is correct.

We invite you to visit our new website @ www.bigcitymovingco.com for useful information, printable moving checklists and helpful packing tips. Do not hesitate to contact us @ 617.821.2274 if you have any additional questions. We look forward to seeing you soon.
