Ryan and Reed
I received a phone call at work from a man from Ryan and Reed. Inc. He claimed that I owed a $499 balance to a gym that I had been a member of two years prior. This was the first I had heard of such a thing and I found it difficult to believe since my family still lived in the area of the gym and my wife was still a member. I know the owner of the gym personally so I found it difficult to believe that if I owed money the first place I would hear about it was from some collections firm several states away. The conversation with this fellow went from bad to worse and during the etire thing I was able to say maybe 4 words. The unprofessional individual on the other end had his script of threats down to a science. He began by telling me I had a debt and that by 12 noon the next day he would have the sheriff deliver papers for me to appear in court. He also said he had been checking up on me and knew that my truck was almost paid off. He informed me that if the case went to court that is what they would come after. I have enough sense to know that sheriffs deputies do not spend their time serving civil summons and that in a civil case the judgment is not al a carte. The winning side cannot simply say, well take that. This individual besides being rude, hostile and attempting to be threatening is completely unfamiliar with the law. Either that or he is a liar. After the phone conversation I called the owner of the gym and he informed me that several people had received similar phone calls. He assured me that I did not owe him any money and he was still unclear why Ryan and Reed were acting this way. He also told me that he was involved with a lawsuit with Ryan and Reed over this very issue. I called Ryan and Reed back at their 1-800 number and asked to speak to the individual that had attempted to threaten me into paying money I did not owe. Predictably I was not allowed to speak with him. I did speak with someone claiming to be a manager of some sort. This individual immediately informed me that he was looking at the recored of my previous conversation and commented that the other employee noted that I had been combative.
Again, I was previously able to speak only about four words and was to shocked to be combative. Needless to say my information that I owed no debt to this gym had little interest to this manager type either. He was nearly as rude as the first individual. Ryan and Reed demonstrated to me that they have unscrupulous employees and that this is a behavior that is condon3ed by management. The experience related by my friend that owns the gym demonstrates that Ryan and Reed does not serve their clients well either. Finally, it seems to me that during the initial conversation the employee revealed a couple of illegal activities. For one checking my credit file without authorization or justification. Second, his threats were not only wrong they were indeed threatening. I am looking into what legal issues these points possibly present and what recourse I may have. Bottom line, these folks are bad apples that do not have their facts straight and are incapable or conducting business in any manner representing professionalism. BC BL C
