1995 Chevrolet Truck Heater Hose Connections and Hose

The design of the water supply to the heater core on this truck is the latest and by far the strongest reason I love Japanese cars. While recently troubleshooting leaks (occuring at both of the "quick disconnects"), I broke the one at the back of the engine on the intake manifold. I broke this device while squeezing the plastic retainer clip ears.

The metal had obviously weakened with age or corrosion. Why are the heater core hoses connected by such a complicated, expensive, trouble-prone and "professional service only" system. When I first found a leak at the front water pump connection, I went to auto supply houses to buy the o-ring inside the coupler assembly. The metal parts can't go away, right? The rubber does the sealing, right? No. Nobody offered such, only the whole coupler device. Oh yes, the o-ring was a proprietary size.

So, I thought I would work around the great engineers at GM and just buy 5/8" hose to 1/2 NPT nipples and do it the old fashioned way that has always worked so well and is so inexpensive on most of the other vehicles on earth. Well as I investigated further, I found that GM had made the hoses two different sizes. The front one an odd size slightly smaller than standard 5/8" marked as 15.1mm. The other hose is slightly larger than 5/8. I haven't tried to find these hose sizes.

I expect problems there too. The nipples from the heater core are matched to these hose sizes and to get a leak free connection I'll probably need the "correct size." I have access to a machine shop and I will overcome all this.

Writing this I have answered all the questions I have listed here. It's plainly obvious. It's all a left wing conspiracy requiring Mr Goodwrench for certain and often. This is my first GM product. This is my last GM product.
