PS2 - Every time we try to play any kind of disk, it says disk error and it make a lot of noise

A lot of my friends have the first issue PS2 and we are having a lot of problems. It's not reading purple disk and also it's not playing games at all. Every time we try to play any kind of disk, it says disk error and it make a lot of noises.

We also heard that the first PS2 was a recall, but we are not sure. Now we want to repair our PS2 because we heard that we can get it repair at no cost but when we called them they said it cost $150 to get it repair. I think it's unfair that others can get it for free and other have to pay. I don'[t think it should matter if the warranty has expired or not, we should get our playstation repaired for free.

Now I have a few questions

1. Is the first issue PS2 a recall?

2. Why is that some people are getting their PS2 repaired at no cost and others there's a charge?
