I received a magazine subscription renewal direct mail piece from your Cook Illustrated's vendor National Credit Audit Corporation which is really sleazy and quite possibly fraudulent. It appears to me and doubtless other lapsed subscribers a "collection notice" for an unpaid bill and products received. In my case, I received a gift subscription for 2003 to Cook's Illustrated magazine.

I did not renew the subscription for 2004 and did not respond to the customary renewal notices from the magazine. This “collection notice” is I suspect the last in the renewal series and terribly inappropriate for such a quality magazine. Owing to the gently threatening and “legal” sounding nature of this direct mail piece, I suspect it has a high response rate, especially among the elderly and less suspecting, and thus is very profitable to both NCAC and Cook's Illustrated.

A quick glance at the numerous consumer complaints against NCAC posted on www.complaints.com suggests this vendor is widely used by magazine companies to renew subscriptions and is equally widely disliked by many former magazine subscribers to publications ranging from Saveur to Sports Illustrated.
