Dish networks new 322 receivers - not compatible with TiVo, ReplayTV, or any other external recording units

New Dish Network receivers are not compatible with TiVo or Replay TV

Dish networks new 322 receivers are not compatible with TiVo, ReplayTV, or any other external recording units. The cause of the problem is a screen saver that displays the Dish Network logo and the message "Press 'Select' to continue". This screen appears on the TV after the receiver makes its daily phone call to get new programming guide information, and appears again every four hours that the channel has not been changed. One cannot change channels or view TV until the Select button on the Dish Network remote has been pressed. TiVo's work by mimicking a satellite receiver or cable boxes remote, and sending its own infared signals to change to the channel that the TiVo wants to record. If the TiVo attempts to change channels after the "Press

Select" message has appeared, the channel will not change (since only the "Select" button and not a channel change will end the screen saver) and the TiVo records the screen saver instead of the intended program. One Dish Network representative informed me that this screen saver could not be disabled. Another rep advised me to do "Menu, 6 (System setup), 1 (Installation), 6 (Updates)" and disable daily updates. This does make the screen saver disappear and allows the TiVo to function properly. However, after two days it leads to a second problem. With daily updates disabled, the Dish receiver displays the message "Error 318. Program information is outdated. Retrieve program information from the satellite now? Yes, Cancel, No?" This message is displayed whenever the user (or the TiVo) attempts to change the channel, and the receiver will not change the channel until an answer is given. Obviously, this too prevents the TiVo from recording the intended program. The "Error 318" message causes problems even if a human is changing the channels. If one selects "Yes" the receiver says it is retrieving program information from the satellite, but the "Error 318" message continues to appear repeatedly every time the channel is changed. Clearly it is not a workable solution to disable daily updates in order to disable the screen saver. The screen saver is the root of the problem and seems to be a very unnecessary feature. Unless it is removed, anyone using TiVo/ReplayTV/etc should avoid getting Dish Network service. Daniel M

The VIP222k does not allow for shutting off daily updates and DISH is COMPLETELY unsupportive. Boy, they sure do sucker you in with the 2 year agreement. If only Tivo could send the select button through the IR the problem would be solved.

Dish just made them even more incompatible. Prior to their most recent firmware upgrade, you could disable daily updates. Their most recent upgrade has removed that option, so every day your Tivo receiver will reset. Customer service is no help. If you have a Tivo or other DVR, don't get Dish.

They are very much compatible and the Dish "screen saver" you see is a problem with the Dish receiver, not your TiVo. The simple thing to do is set a daily timer to change the channel at say 3:05am or whenever you see that screen saver come on. I have used a 322 with my TiVo for quite some time and have had no worries after setting the timer.
