In early , December 2003, on a Friday, I went to the Mundelein, IL Burlington Coat Factory. I purchased with cash, an item of clothing ( dressy jacket) to wear to a Christmas Party. I could not find anything else in the store I would want to buy even as christmas gifts. When I returned home, I realized the item was poorly stitched and coming apart and looked awful in daylight. I was not about to wear this.
I returned a couple days later, only to be told they only give store credits not refunds. I told them I paid with cash. They refused to give a refund. They will not even refund a charge card purchase. I am out my cash. I did not see anywhere visable in the store of this policy. I came home and emailed Burlington, only to receive the emails below.
Isn't this extortion of our money? Fraud? Theft?
When I told friends of this, they in turn told me that they no longer shop at Burlington for this very reason. I sent an email to all my friends telling them of my experience with Burlington in hopes that they send it on to their friends.
I will go back to Burlington one last time to turn in the store credit and never step in their doors again.
I am on the board of directors of three (nation wide) associations/clubs and reporter of one. I will pass on my experience.

Dear XXX, Unfortunately there are no exceptions to our policy. Even I am unable to issue cash refunds or charge card credits. We do everything that the Law requires notifying our consumers of our policy. Our store policy is posted throughout the store, behind Customer Service, and posted at every register before you check out. We also reiterate the policy at the bottom of your receipt.
