Washington Mutual Mortgage - trouble processing mortgage payment

Last month, Dec 4th, I sent Washington Mutual my entire mortgage payment due plus the extra escrow I had the option of paying instead of having a larger mortgage payment in 2002. I put the necessary paperwork in the envelope with my check(bottom half of statment that I usually send)..

Yesterday I received my check back from Wahington stating that they did not have enough information to process my check. I included my statement as I usually do.

I also received on this same day a statement for my upcoming mortgage payment which included the payment they returned to me with a late fee attached. Also my mortgage payment is higher because they did not proocess the check with both the mortgage payment andthe extra escrow.

I am going to follow through on this and see for example how this has been listed with the credit bureaus. Also they did not date the paper with the reason for returned check. Am I missing something here. Who's at fault. Why should I pay a late fee?
