Complaints.com received the following e-message on March 22, 2001:
From: Kim Kendall RE: CALLWAVE - "free" internet answering machine
I recently received a Callwave scam e-mail. I signed up with their "free"
service (although it's not really free....I pay a small monthly fee to my
phone company for this feature). About a month later, I received an e-mail
from them that their "free" service could no longer be provided due to
customers not clicking on their advertising, so they could no longer provide
this service. However, they could continue with the service for a monthly fee
(~ $5.00) if I was interested. They would also through in Caller ID at this
add'l cost. I decided that the service was necessary for me, so I decided to
not respond to their e-mail by canceling. I found out this past week, that a co-worker also has the service and is
still getting their so called "free" service. I went to their web site and
ask their customer service why they were still advertising on their site
about the "free" service if it's no longer "free"? One of their customer
service reps responded to me that they do still have the "free" service. This
immediately clued me in that I'd been mislead by them. I was told to
uninstall my current Callwave service and reinstall. I am currently now
waiting to see if this works and if I do not start getting billed add'l fees
from them, but my guess is that I will and will have to deal with that next. I just wanted to pass this "warning" on to other potential users of their
service and their misleading scam. There's nothing like "fine print" in their
e-mail that would have led me to believe anything other than what I told you
above. Thank you for your service,
Kim Kendall

For months, my Wife's Credit card kept showing up with $7.95 worth of charges from "Callwave".
I nasked her about it and:
1. She never heard of the company
2. Doesn't know what service they perform.
3. Never signed up for a service/product she did not ask for.
I had another company that did a similar thing....they somehow get ahold of your credit card number and then start charging you for a service that you never asked for.
I am a simple country boy. Where I come from this is called "stealing".
The best way to handle this is to bring it to the attention of your Credit Card Companies attention. Get ahold of their
"Fraud Department". This is a Felony because it is over State Lines.
