Craftsman 5 HP rear-tine tiller - purchased in 2000 - main shaft broke while in use

My Craftsman 5 HP rear-tine tiller purchased in 2000 stopped suddenly in a pre-tilled row. After removing the case the main shaft fell to the ground broken.

I only have used the tiller on a twenty-five-year-old garden that has been tilled many times. I have never abused the machine ans while the cost of the part is reasonable, the labor charge is pricey. Are there problems with this particular part?
