PlayStation 2 - stopped playing DVD's about 6 months after purchase - Sony says $ 128 to fix

Complaints.com received the following consumer message on August 30, 2002:

Approximately 6 months after buy the PlayStation 2 for $299, it stopped playing DVD's. It simply does not read them.

This isn't a problem with the DVD, as we have tried many different discs, including a brand new one. When we called Sony's support department, we were told it would cost $128 to fix the problem.
