RE: AOL / AIM service - AOL Instant Messenger - free screen name disabled after cancelled AOL service - but had free screen name prior to having signing up for AOL service This is to inform the world about a sneaky practice that AOL has. Here is my situation. 1. I had AOL's Instant Messenger (AIM) product for years.
2. I decided to purchase the full AOL service after already having my AIM screen name.
3. After a year or so of spam, I decided to cancel my full AOL service.
4. Then my AIM wouldn't work any more, and for me to get back the "FREE" screen name that I had years before their service I would have to purchase their service again. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to use my screen name.
5. So I had to purchase one more month of AOL service then create a brand new screen name not linked to the service. Once my service was active, I could then download my buddy list and had to IM everyone I know with my new account.
