RE: Frigidaire gas stove - baby burned hand in gap on face of stove

On Feb. 6, 2003 our 10 month old son crawled to our Frigidaire gas stove and stuck his hand in the gap between the oven door and the broiler door after I had just turned it off. He had first, second, and third degree burns on his hand. The third degree burn was across a nuckle which caused four more trips to the docters office to insure that he did not lose the mobilty in that finger and that infection did not set in.

After the first time I was able to talk to a superviser and they learned why I was calling, that same supervisor ,who's name was **, refused to return several voice mail messages. I was able to get the company's insurance agents' name and number . After talking with her she then tried contacting Frigidaire but was unable to get them to return her phone calls. She then talked with the enginneer who designed the stove and he claims the gap has to be there to circulate air so the oven door won't over heat.

She then tells me this has happened before. We asked the company to pay the medical bills , replace the stove, and change the design of the stove. Frigidaire agreed to pay the medical bills but said they did not feel liable and would not honor anything else. My problem with this is they already said this has happened before but are not willing to fix an obvious flaw in the design. I can still hear my baby screaming and see the look on his face. This could happen to any child. If this has happened to you we would like to know about it. My son is now thirteen months old and has a scar from the third degree burn. Frigidaire does not think what happened to my son is important enough to fix this problem. We are hoping that if other people have gone through this we can make a collective effort to have Frigidaire take resposibility for thier lack of action on fixing a poorly designed stove.
