Lidl Ireland have recently moved their NI site to .co.uk from the former .ie domain. Many Irish customers have been outraged by this immature move on the part of Lidl Ireland. Since you do NOT want to see the .co.uk domain when browsing Lidl northern Ireland, you are forced to accept a substandard website domain with no reference to Ireland.

There are a number of issues regarding Lidl's decision to raise controversy in this way: firstly Lidl treats the Irish market with contempt by deciding to distance Lidl NI from Lidl Ireland. Even when contacted by phone the staff at Lidl, located in Newbridge, Co Kildare, can be rude, unprofessional and discourteous. Secondly, Lidl Ireland's prices are considerably higher than those in Lidl UK - this makes it more difficult for Irish consumers to compare prices when cross-border shopping. There are many alternatives that offer the exact same thing as Lidl due to the influx of other German stores like Aldi (who are also cheaper).

For those of you who don't know, Northern Ireland is a disputed territory - annexed from Ireland in 1922. Recent conflict over its status has been widespread but Lidl's decision to get involved in politics has serious ramifications on it's business in Ireland. Irish customers will boycott and dump Lidl after this. They are shady and false advertising and misleading consumers. This is my way of letting you know that if you intend to retain Lidl northern Ireland under .co.uk, you should know what you are getting into before you burn your bridges.
