Avoid renting a car from Thrifty-Terstappen at the Frankfurt Airport in Germany!

They have a 'cushy' insurance scheme with VISA that cost me 17 Euros per day or a total of 459 Euros over and above the contract price settled through Expedia.ca last fall. Their agent at the airport refused to accept the Collision Loss Damage Waiver covered by my Citibank Platinum Master Card in spite of presenting a confirmation letter from Citibank. Yet, there was no hesitation in honouring that same Master Card for the total amount charged for the rental.

As expected, my written complaint fell on deaf ears. The CEO of Dollar Thrifty, the CEO of VISA, and the CEO of Expedia chose to hide behind pages of 'Fine Print'. Terstappen in Germany did not bother to respond and CitiMastercard hoped to retain my loyalty with a $100 credit. I am still short the equivalent of $550Cdn.

Have I experience COLLUSION - UNETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICES - RIPP-OFF TACTICS - or worse OUTRIGHT FRAUD ??

Is it time to impose more REGULATIONS on the Industries implicated here ??

This is very interesting.

We just got back from Austria and rented a Dollar car from Terstappen in Munich.

They would not accept our VISA for the Collision LDW stating they would only accept Mastercard! That sleazy arrangement cost us an extra 105 Euros.

I am in the process of sending a letter to Expedia and Dollar but ultimately will probably have to end up paying this.

Had a similar experince with Dollar. A word of caution to everyone, who intends to rent Dollar/Thrifty cars in Germany. Dollar/Thrifty uses a licensee in Germany with very dubious, misleading, deceptive and fraudulent business practices. When you order the car on the Dollar or Thrifty website, you will receive the usual confirmation, which breaks down the rental cost in its subcomponents such as airport fees, VAT, road tax etc. Nothing was mentioned of a mandatory insurance premium of 20 ($28) per day. For every car I ever rented anywhere in the world, the credit card always covered the insurance premium. The AMEX Gold card specifically mentioned this coverage. It was the counter agent at the airport, who insisted on another 400.- ($560.-) insurance premium. It is highly immoral to spring this surprise on customers who just arrived on a sleepless trans-Atlantic overnight flight. This made the car the most expensive car I ever rented.

In addition, the car had no air conditioning and when I started phoning the agency on the 0700 number supplied on the rental agreement, I was constantly put on hold and transferred to other agents and found out later, why. The 0700 is not toll free number, but costs appr 1.- ($1.35) per minute, an attractive side income for the agency. Should you be in the unfortunate position to have to call the agency for help, use their German direct dial number 0203-348-5422. It will still be a long-distance call, but infinitely cheaper than the 0700 number. I spent an additional $50 in calling the agency for help, which I never got. I drove around in an oven for 3 weeks with temperatures of over 30C (85F). It later turned out that the connecting hoses for the A/C on this brand-new car were missing.

It does not matter which credit card one produces at the time of the rental, Terstappen will turn it down. This is in violation of the agreement that they have with the credit card compnaies, which clearly state that insurance is covered by the card.

Terstappen agents seem to be instructed to extract as much extra money from hapless customers as possible. A year prior to my incident, I appeared at the Dollar counter in Hamburg with a confirmed reservation and a confirmed price and the agent wanted to force me to take out the extra insurance. I walked away and she called me back to "make me an offer I could not refuse". She offered me an upgrade to a Mercedes, if I agree to a 100 Euro insurance contract (vs her original demand of 400 Euro). Since I considered the upgrade a good value, I took it.

In other words, Terstapenn tries to cream their customer to the highest possible level. Stay away from this company. Even Hertz or Avis cars will be cheaper, because they stick to the rules. If you get caught by these illegal practices, report them to your credit car company and dispute the amount for as long as possible.

The sales people are GREEDY thieves who will OVERCHARGE Customers whenever they feel they can.

The sales people are for Commissions due to the Ever Changing Corporate Sales Plans and Poor location management.

The general manager Miriam Restrepo is a thief. I can believe Todd Kushner had been fired and Miriam Restrepo is still working here, dont get wrong Todd Kushner is out of control this guy is thief but Miriam Restrepo must be gone with Todd Kushner together she must have someone in Tulsa that take care of her.

The General Manager Miriam Restrepo discriminate between employees and give preference to her friends

Miriam Restrepo gets customers to sign up for services and options they Don't need.

Miriam Restrepo will quote you a daily rate of $62. per day and any other sales rep will give you $32. Per day rate.

The management, are the biggest fools and corporate kiss a**es. They hire and fire the best employees and don't realize what type of problems they created. Many employees they keep are uneducated MORONS, who are thieves, liars.

General Manager Miriam Restrepo has numerous personal problems that she brings to work.. She tries to be the big boss of the entire location with her rudeness and nasty disposition.

General Manager Miriam Restrepo tells lies about employees that are NOT true.

Some Employees STEAL from customers by not returning items found in the rental cars. Some Employees also STEAL from the lost and found and nobody gets blamed or caught.

I feel sorry for the few good employees that have to suffer daily while working with these incompetent idiots.

Ken Wiley. Director of Operations at Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group should be fire as well for not doing anything and let her keep her job. Miriam Restrepo is stealing from Dtag Corporation and no one in corporate care neither why?

Ripoff!

booked a car in Germany through the Thrifty site, and when we got there the name was Terstappen, and they had a laminated notice that you HAD to have at least $75k USD coverage or buy their insurance (our cc only covered $50k), and I searched for this info before the trip & even contacted Thrifty, but was never given this info which is clearly a ruse to force you to buy their expensive insurance.

Never again, will always use Sixt if renting in Germany.

oh & they tried to make use fill a claim on a mark where the suitcase rubber left a smudge on the bumper! I flatly & calmly refused. Clearly a scam to make money off the insurance company.
