Rip off: LEGACY OSP 800-6700015 USA

Payphone
Newark Airport, NJ
US

Landed at Newark Airport on Nov. 12, 2009, I went to Dollar Rent A Car in P4 to pick up a rental car. While there I need to call a friend about 20 miles away in Dumont, NJ.

Without any coins at hand, I saw a credit card slot on the Payphone. I thought that it should cost the same by using credit card as using coins, so I put my card in. Following the instruction, but the dial did not get through. Out of my amazement (after dial zero), an operator asked me for the number of my friend and my credit number, then he asked for my zip code. Since I was using a card issued in China, I told him I do not have a zip code. He then asked my name and told me to hold on. After a few second, I realized that the operator was trying to make it a collect call, so I ended the call before it got through (The collect call was later confirmed by my friend, but I am not so sure whether my friend was billed or not at this point). After about ten minutes, I tried again and the same thing happened, so I told the operator that I did not have a zip code, but somehow the call went through this time, and I talked for a minute or so.

Today going through my credit card account, I saw a $12.76 charge from LEGACY OSP 800-6700015 USA. What is this? After quite a while, I realized that this must be the charge of the Payphone call I made at Newark Airport. What a rip-off!

I too used the pay phone at Newark airport at P-4 at Dollar car rental and didn't have coins so used my credit card - 2 bills - 1 at $12.75 and 1 at $10.46- I didn't talk to anyone just an answering machine at my familys home. I am in the process of trying to get my money back.

This is exactly what happened to me. I landed in Newark and got stuck in the airport overnight. My cell had died and I couldn't charge it so I used my credit card. There is no indication of the rates. I was charged 4 different amounts from 4 different phone calls (the cheapest being 11.24. Plus $1 for each call. I called the company and they wre very rude. Told me I couldn't get my money back. They told me their rates are listed in the automated system if you push the 4th option. I push # 3 as soon as I heard it because I was making a credit card call. I have called my bank to dispute the charges. Very deceptive practices and I believe should be illegal.

I totally agree. My husband locked himself out of the house and he called me on my cell - the area code he was in was not the same and his call was less than 4 minutes. By the time he was done, he was charged with $31.50 - and on MY credit card. He called me back again for less than two minutes, and THAT call was, again, $31.50. This is a complete rip-off.

As I posted earlier, I called Amex to dispute the ridiculous charge from lEGACY OSP. Amex tried to contact their office a number of times and could not get anybody to talk to. How can a company like this remain in business? Amex gave up and decided to give me back my money. What a nice gesture on their part. How fortunate for me to have used my American Express card.

I had the same experience at Newark Airport. I just got my credit card statement and was shocked to see a $43.09 charge for a 2-3 minute phone call to Toronto. At first I didn't recognize the name of the company on my statement so I googled it and found all these postings. I just called Amex to dispute it as suggested by one of the comments here. I will keep you posted. I called my girlfriend who also used the phone in Newark Airport and was on it for a long time. I was curious to find out how much she was charged. She was smart enough to buy a phone card to use for her call so she was okay. Thanks of posting this complaint or I would never have known about this company that rips people off. Next time any of you want to use the phone in the airports, buy a phone card.

To everyone who gets ripped off by Legacy OSP -- who gets enormous bills for calls that should cost a couple of dollars at the highest -- dispute the charges with your bank or credit card holder. Let them know what the charges should have been. I did and Legacy refunded my money.

My husband called me from JFK airport, about 2 to 3 minutes call, and was charged $19.62. The instruction is local call 50 cents.

I called them and they refused to return the money.

I asked them:" your instruction is 50 cents local call, why charged $19?"

their answer is very confusing, like different systems, hard to understand.

But It is illegal business.

I am the person who reported this to the U.S. Attorney General. I also disputed the amounts -- three charges of $29.57 each for call that lasted long enough to leave a message -- and they refunded my money. I am urging anyone who has this happen to immediately dispute the amount with your bank. I got my money back! Hope you do too!

I was ripped off by them also, my husband called me from downtown Pittsburgh collect and I used my debit card to accept the call and was billed a $7.95 plus $1.00 charge for a one minute call. This has to be illegal. did I mention that I live in Pittsburgh, about ten minutes away from the calls origination.

Add me to the list.

I supplied a credit card number/security number for a call to a cell phone from a pay phone at Jacksonville Int. Airport, Florida.

THe person calling me got confused I guess by the process and hung up. I never talked to anyone but the operator.

Just checked my credit card statement, and got socked with two charges, one for $1.00, and one for $15.10. AND I NEVER TALKED TO ANYONE BUT THE OPERATOR.

My credit card statement doesn't even have a phone number listed, just says LEGACY OSP.

NOW WHAT???

Yikes! The same thing happened to me. I just reported my experience to the U.S. Attorney General and copied all of the above messages regarding Legacy OSP and included them in my message. I am very interested to see if this is a legal practice. In the meantime, tell everyone you know not to use their credit cards for phone calls!

SAME HERE. My mother missed her flight at NY so she had to make a collect call for about 2 minutes, and we were billed $20. WTF, this is ridiculous.

I received a collect call from houston airport to phoenix which lasted about 3mins. My card was chard $19.65 and another $1. I wanted to now what this charge was about so I called the number which I got from my credit card charges. Their operator put me on to the billing department when I asked what type of company they were. The customer service department never answered after long long wait.

I had to search their name on the internet to understand who they were.

Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!What a rip off!

The same fate..... Does anybody have their postal address or web address. I am trying to file a complain with BBB and they don't have them in their database. So, the postal address of Legacy OSP is required.

Thanks...

Got us too. Mother-in-law's car broke down, called us collect, charged us $20, and then another $1. Filing complaint with FCC.

I landed on Indianapolis Airport...on 28th January 2010, i saw that the phone call cost was around USD 1 for about 5 mins. I didnt have any coins handy, so i used my credit card instead, by dialing 0 and calling operator, after a week when my credit card statement arrived i saw a charge of 29 usd on my account, from LEGACY OSP, i was puzzled and i searched on internet and found this, they are charging 29 usd for a 5 mins call.....i think they do it with all international customers, as they think that those poor souls will not be complaint from another country.

I have filed a complaint with FCC.GOV

Please do the same. I was charged $13.54 for 1 min of a call. There is no indication on the phone that for using Credit Card the rates are sky high. Not is there option in the automated service that proactively advises customer to check the rates. Deceptive....very deceptive.

When I got a collect call from my brother, calling from MIA International Airport to TX, I requested to charge the call to my phone bill...like in the old days. The operator indicated that he only way to connect him was by C. Card # + Security Code. I fail to ask about the fees and of course they don’t tell you anything upfront. The charge was about $28 for about 3-5 minutes. There are tons of other complaints about this company. I have disputed the charge and changed my credit card number...they will have to work hard to get what they claim is their well earned money.

MARK
