We met Danny Spence recently when we decided to attend the church where he is the pastor. In late September, he was invited into our home to visit us and pray for Dale Rose Findley who died from pancreatic cancer on November 21, 2009. Even though Todd and I spoke with Danny and he left messages on CD in our mailbox, the very next time Dale Rose saw Danny was when he came to pray for her on October 15, 2009. Danny came again on October 17, 2009 and prayed, but Dale Rose was asleep and hardly noticed. The fourth time Dale Rose saw Danny was on October 23rd when he and his wife went to the hospice house to visit her. That night, Dale Rose demanded that I give a box to Danny that supposedly contained $29,000, and he was supposed to come and get it. Instead of coming for the box that weekend, Danny had his wife call and ask Dale Rose if she wanted them to still have the box, and that made her angry with me. We went to Danny's home and took the box, and since Dale Rose didn't want it opened in front of Todd and myself and since there was no key that fit it, we left. The next evening, Dale Rose wanted me to gather all her financial information, and because I knew she was taking some pretty powerful pain medication and having some confusion, I got concerned. The next day, I was told she could have no visitors or phone calls. The next day, I found out that she gave Danny Spence Power of Attorney and made him successor to her living trust. I'm not saying Danny asked for anything, but he shouldn't have accepted that responsibility that soon. My complaint is that we invited someone who claims to be a minister into our home to support our family during crisis, and within one month, Dale Rose gives him complete control, and whether this was intentionally done or not, our family was destroyed! Dale Rose and I were very close, and my husband and I had been caring for her in our home since she became ill. Both before and after she became ill, she and I were inseparable. After Dale Rose thought Todd and I stole her money, she refused to talk with us, and the only way I saw her one last time before she died was to petition the court to allow me to do so. To make matters worse, when she died, Danny didn't call us, and until I contacted my attorney and had Dale Rose's attorney call and express her wishes to Danny, he was planning to have her creamated. In August, Dale Rose made all her funeral arrangements, and she expressed to me what she wanted! Her sister and niece who live in Illinois weren't even contacted until I located a phone number and called them. Yes, I know Danny wanted and needed a new parking lot for the church, but meeting a dying woman in September and having control of her and her assets within the next month is totally wrong. As a minister, I think Danny crossed lines he shouldn't have crossed. As one who has been a Christian since the age of fourteen, I was taught to trust those who are spiritual leaders, but now, not only did I lose one of the closest people in the world to me who trusted me and always knew I wouldn't steal from her, but I lost the last three weeks of time Dale Rose was alive, so we had no time together. I'm not sure if she was told we stole from her or if she was just lead to believe we did, but we were never able to straighten that out before she died. The next time I think of inviting a minister into our home to pray, I'll definitely think twice before I do. I'm not saying all pastors aren't trustworthy, but I've learned a hard and devistating lesson.
