Kmart layaway Christmas 2009

Avoid Kmart's layaway program by any means possible. We loaded a shopping cart with items and after spending an hour wasted shopping I waited in line for 30-minutes to try and put them on layaway but the line never moved. So we just left. The next day we wound up at a different Kmart and there was no line so we went ahead and grabbed some toys for Christmas and put them on layaway. The clerk told me not to worry about the early pickup date because it would be extended due to the holidays. According to my receipt I need to make a payment today so I went online to pay. However, the web site completely contradicts what's on my receipt as well as its own information in parts! My receipt shows that I need to pay a minimum of $76 today. The web site shows I need to pay the balance in full ($152) in three days. My receipt shows my pickup date as 12/04 but the web site shows pickup by 11/23 - two days before what it's telling me the minimum payment is due by! When I try to pay anything other than what the web site lists as the minimum amount due (which it says is the full balance) it won't let me progress. I called both the company's national customer service number and the local store and neither was able to offer any assistance at all, other than the store saying they'd note my call and not put my stuff back on the shelves, which I don't believe. Also, I noted that the clerk told me that the pickup date listed on my receipt would be extended because of the holidays but the manager I talked to today said that wasn't true and that I will have to retreive my stuff in early December or I'll lose it. The whole reason we do layaway is because we have limited space and it's a way of securing our gifts early and having them stored elsewhere until right before Christmas. No wonder Kmart is at death's door financially. They're a poorly stocked company with inflated prices that can't compete with Walmart and Target and they're totally incompetent to boot!!!
