Sparing future Chicago renters or owners stress

The condo that I previously lived in at 879 N LaSalle St in Chicago, IL 60610 was

an absolute nightmare. It was on the ground floor and had many problems. It had a centipede problem that required an exterminator and will continue to require those services. The place was filthy when I moved in. I had to clean it since the owner did not want to pay to have it cleaned and then I kept it very clean. The place had many cracks and holes that required repair including a hole behind the fridge where bugs were coming out of. Code violations meant that the hot water was shut off until the required work was done, so it was very cold showers for almost two weeks. Gas run appliances were also shut off. The furnace filters had not been changed in a long time and the furnace shut down. There was sediment that was built up in the hot water heater according to the repair man. I repaired many of the cracks in the floors myself. The apartment also had a musty smell. My living experience was so stressful there, that I can only hope to spare someone else from having to endure the same problems. Please check the floors, check for centipedes and ask when the place was last exterminated. Check the furnace filters and the hot water heater. Also be alert to someone having access to the apartment. On two ocassions I returned to the place with the door left slightly ajar. Hopefully this will help good people like myself. The owner had been incredibly dishonest in my experience with him and I would make sure to get everything in writing. I didn't deserve to have to deal with all of those problems.
