hotel match price

I called hotels.com to make a reservation for a getaway weekend. The hotel direct site was cheaper than hotels.com.

Hotel.com told me that they will match the price, they took my credit card num. procede with the reservation, he gave me the reservation num. then he tranfer me to another costumer agent who told me that will have to pay the full price. After 45 min talking with them I told them to cancel the reservation, they told me if i do that they will charge my credit card one night cancelation fee.
