Contra Costa County Animal services I purchased a dog from the Contra Costa County Animal Services on 2/9 for $145. We were told that we had 30 days to bring the dog back if there was a problem. on the 31st day I called because we had tried to workout a problem with the dog & have had no luck. I was told that the 30 days were up & that we would have to surrender the dog to them for $20.On Easter, my girlfriend was walking the dog & it attacked another dog. The other owners & my girlfriend tried for sometime to separate the animals, but had no luck. The other owners called someone & a truck pulled up seconds later. The dogs were tossed in the back with out my girlfriends consent & we couldn't find them after that. We searched the area & put up posters, but could not find her. We Found her on the Animal Shelters website on 3/26. I contacted them to tell them what happened & they asked if I could come pick her up. I agreed & there was no mention of any cost. About 30 min. later, I received a call from Animal services & I was told that I had to pay a $50 fine & they would wave the boarding fees. I told them that I disagreed with that & that I should not have to pay because the dog was stolen from my girlfriend & she had no control over that. I was told that the only other option I had was to surrender the dog to them which will cost me $20. 1st: I was sold a dog with an obvious problem & they should allow us to exchange the dog for one that does not have one. 2nd: The dog has a tendency to attack other dogs & not let go. It attacked a puppy, a middle aged dog & a very old dog. Because of this we could not take her for walks where other people allow there dogs to be off leash (which is everywhere). 3rd: They should have tested the dog for this problem. They knew of this social problem and mentioned it to me when I sent in the paperwork to surrender her. 4th: They did not correctly identify the breed of the dog (they said she was a pit mix). We did after some research at home we found she is a boxer/pit mix. And, when we found her on their website in the lost and found they identified her as a German Shepard Beagle mix. 5th: I should not have to pay any fees or fines when the dog was stolen from my girlfriend. I definitely should not have to pay surrendering fee for an animal that I know that had a serious, & dangerous social problem. 6th: I feel that a full reimbursement of the $145 for selling me a dog that had known problem is in order or a chance to get a dog that will not try to kill other dogs.
