Havertys

Product: High prices from employees point of view

Company: Not Available

Location: US

Category: Other

Let me start off by saying that no one should ever shop at Haverty's and here are reasons why.

1: Furniture markup--- Haverty's furniture is so tremedously marked up far more than any other furniture store. Take a piece that costs $999.00 in the store, Haverty's cost only $299.00. A piece selling for $1, 999.oo, again Haverty's cost is $599.00.

2: Quality of product--- Haverty's product is not the best by comparison. I have seen so many returns because of the unit falling apart or just being delivered damaged.

3: Delivery cost--- Haverty's has raised their delivery charge from $49.95 to $199.99-$699.99. Haverty's just raised 60% of their product to cover high fuel costs and now they want you to pay another price to have your product delivered. You DO NOT have to pay this charge. If anyone pays this, then shame on you.

4: Protection plan (Gold-in Home)--- This "protection" for your furniture is a big joke. Salespeople are given free rang to lie about what this worthless plan covers. Salespeople get paid at least 25% of what you spend for this. The price can range from $199.00-$699.00. If you buy this plan, you might as well kiss your money goodbye. NEVER buy this. It does NOT work.

5: "NO-Haggle policy"--- Haverty's has started this no-haggle policy meaning that they will not discuss price with you. They believe and want you to pay what they say. Haverty's may tell you that their product is a Haverty's brand also. All of this is bull. Haverty's makes none of their product. You can buy 80%-90% of their product from another company at 1/2 the price of Haverty's. Just ask who makes the item and shop around. If they say that it is a Haverty's brand, laugh and walk away. They want you to believe this junk.

I should know, I worked for Havertys for over two years. I know all there is to know about this company.

Sounds like a personal vendetta... you should know better being an ex-employee... is this your way of soliciting business?

Let me start off by saying this person apparently has no clue to the actual cost of items currently sold at Haverty's or any other furniture store. The furniture mark up was posted by Furniture Today Magazine just recently at 51.5%, which is up from 49.6% in 2007, not the 70% mark up stated here. I worked for an Ashely HomeStore for the last 2 years and have seen the actual mark up by the owner, each store is independant from Ashley Furniture Inc., go from 45% to approximately 65%. The products that are very similar at other competitors is kept lower, around 50% in oreder to keep people who shop around from laughing at the extremely over-priced inventory.

As for the quality, it is not all "hand crafted heirloom" furniture, but does far exceed anything made/offered by Ashley, Millenium, Rooms To Go, American Signature, Value City and many many others. The majority of product now offered is Exclusive to Havertys. This may be only a fabric change from what another independant retailer may offer, but it does make the pieces different than what you will find anywhere else. If you want to see returns, go work at any of the warehouses for the aforementioned companies and you will see many items damaged from their trip from Asia, while still in the boxes/packaging. Many being touched up or re-finished/re-furbished completely before shipped to the customer who thought they were getting new quality furniture. A company that "owns the factory in Asia" has even more issues with the making of their furniture. If a mistake is made the entire company "feels it" and those costs are passed onto the consumer. All items are finalized by human beings and therefore are subject to problems. At least retailers like Havertys can refuse items that are shipped damaged or improper to them and not impact the customer with an increase profit margin to compensate for someone else's error.

As to delivery, any purchase under $1,000 is charged 10% of the purchase price with a minimum charge of $49.99. Maximum delivery charge for any furniture purchase over $1,000 is $99.99. Many other stores charge $79.99 on any purchase. The Ashley store I worked at, starts at $59.99 for any mattress set without furniture, $79.99 for any furniture purchase under $500, $129.99 for furniture under $2,000 and continues to increase the more they deliver. A purchase of $35,000, an entire house for many people, costs the consumer $1,050!

Let's talk protection plans. The #1 company in the U.S. is Guardsman, who offers the Gold-In-Home Plan. The #2 is Montage Furniture Services. Guardsman is usually lower in cost to the customer and covers a few issues that Montage does not such as "Seem Seperation" on Leather and Fabric Furniture and "Mold and Mildew Damage" on Mattresses. All stains are covered by both companies, though I have had many customers complain that Montage tried to "walk them through cleaning the stained sofa themselves" and only sending a technician if the customer could not remove it after they sent the customer a cleaning kit to try it again on their own. There is a "Bonus Level" of 25% commission if certain quota's are exceeded, but this is the industry standard accross the board. The commission rate paid for most insurance policies, no matter what product covered, is usually "higher" than if selling an actual product. I personally have seen many more people happy that they bought the protection plan and it saved them hudreds and sometimes thousands of dollars. I have seen few people upset, when they get a brand new item. It is usually a customer that the factory no longer made their set, so they have to change their decore to bring in an entirely different set.

The Havertys Exclusives are just that. Made by manufacturers such as Lane and Bernhardt, these items are sold only by Havertys. Many of Havertys non-exclusive items, like rugs, lamps and accessories are available through other retailers, but offered at the same profit margin as stated before. The half price elsewhere comment is just not correct. The only time I have seen any retailer offer an exact item for less is through the internet with no warranty or through a "liquidation center" that has bought out another defunct retailers inventory. Good furniture costs money. I believe that if you truly shop around, comparing actual quality of the materials used in the product, services offered by the retailer, available financing and the availability of products, you will find that Havertys is a Great Value. Not the cheap "Super Store" and not Robb & Stucky or one of those "Custom Only" Froo Froo Boutiques either.

Yes, you should know, if you worked for the company for 2 years, but you don't know the truth. I hope you are happy now, whever you may be working. My guess, Customer Service Department.

Let me start off by saying that I have made many people with Havertys very upset. I have received many emails about revealing the true cost of their product to the public. I feel that right now more than ever, shoppers need to be informed as to what they are paying for furniture, what the retailer pays for the same product and where they buy the same item for 1/2 the cost. I believe at that point the consumer can make the best decision where to purchase home furnishings and mattresses from. Let me give you a few examples of what I am speaking of----

Your cost Havertys cost

Mayfair leather sofa $1,699.00 $499.00

Santa Fe leather sofa $2,399.00 $799.00

Franklin leather sofa $1,999.00 $549.00

Rhaspody Tempurpedic $2,549.00-$6,199.00 $699.00-$2,249.00

Deluxe Tempurpedic $1,849.00-$6,899.00 $419.00-$2,449.00

Sealy mattress $899.00-$3,199.00 $299.00-$999.00

Serta mattress $799.00-$2,999.00 $249.00-$949.00

Marseille Master BR $2,999.00 $719.00

This is only a few examples of what Havertys sells. If you have a specific item you have a question about, please email me at enoch 17 @ wmconnect.com and I will let you know where you can buy that item for a lot less cost. NEVER purchase the 5 year protection (GOLDPLAN). This plan DOES NOT work. It is only designed to make you pay for repairs that will never take place. Salesmen get paid big money to sell you this and they make up false testimonies about what is has done. Search the web and you will see others that have purchased this and learn first hand how they were robbed in the process.

Also since my last entry, I have received 419 more emails from people that I have helped and 186 new emails from those wanting assistance with locating furniture at 1/3 or lower the price of Havertys. The total amount of people contacting me about their savings was over 1,000. The savings by consumers was far below the amount I originaly predicited. Just by the numbers presented to me by those choosing not to purchase from Havertys, those comsumers saved on average of $3,500.00. Lets do the correct math. We will use a low number also to reflect those from the 186 email bracket. If 700 people saved on average $2,000.00, Havertys lost a minimum of $1,400,000.00. That savings was passed directly to those consumers choosing to believe they could get a better deal for the same product elsewhere. The day will come when Havertys will have to take this matter seriously and be prepared to be judged not just on their ridiculosly high prices but the lies concerning quality, protection plans and foolish delivery charges. I challenge everyone to think before you buy. Why pay more for the same product just because it came from Havertys. You can save thousands of dollars. If you are interested in a product from Havertys, email me at enoch 17 @ wmconnect.com with the name of the item and I will tell you who makes it, where to locate a dealer in your area to purchase from and what you really should pay for the item.

Two years with a company thats approaching 126 years in business and you apparently discovered all of the the secrets. lol. As mentioned in previous posts, you don't really seem to be that knowledgable or are simply choosing to convey half-truths. Either is a disappointment. To the consumer, do your own research and you will more than likely find many people have purchase and owwned Havertys for years. The poster griping hear seems to have a beef or as mentioned before is interersted in solicitation.

If you worked with Havertys then you should have known that no one, ever made a claim that they make the furniture. This is a given fact specially when the manufacturer is stamped on the sticker and tags. So, you are obviously either a half wit or was an incompetent salesperson. The guardsman warranty has a warranty information that unfortunately salesperson and customers choose not to read. That's makes both the seller and the consumer stupid. Learn to read. It is in both English and spinach people! The Havertys warranty information is also listed in the website. If you can Facebook, you can google Havertys website. So ultimately, it is the salesperson, like you were, that has a poor drive for correct information and the consumer who chooses ignorance as an excuse who are at fault.

Let me assure you, Haverty's is slick, slimy and not to be used. The financing for the 18 month interest free - they broke every rule in the book. I had nothing in writing, no dislcosure, no papers and they were trying to get me to hit "accept" on the electronic key pad saying i consented to electronic disclosure and i did not even have that. Today calls to Haverty's consumer services and GE bank services I learned that my gut feeling of sliminess was warranted. Truth in lending means they have to disclose, etc. not the bullshit they tried with me!

I like their Havertys service, style, and quality of the furniture. Bought 12000 dollars worth of furniture delivered for free with no interest a couple years ago. Still have furniture with no problems currently with drawers slammed full of clothes still drawers are in tact! Bogus critic^^^^

I did however not take the protection plan just because Dave Ramsey says not to take any protection plan.
