I'm posting this for a friend as I am the one who eventually got his laptop up and running again. He knows absolutely nothing about computers and took his HP laptop to Geek Squad when it started getting system error messages because it is still under warranty.


The first complaint is the time. When he brought it in, they told him he could pick it up in 2 weeks. When he went back 2 weeks later, they hadn't touched it and told him it would be another week.


They eventually told him that he needed to have his hard drive replaced. He agreed and requested that he get the old hard drive back afterwards. When he got his laptop back, they did not return his old hard drive.



When my friend got home turned on his machine, it just booted to a blank screen. At that point he brought his laptop. It turns out that they just put a brand new hard drive in, but didn't install Windows or even format the drive. Basically, in that condition, they gave him back a paper weight.


So in summation, Geek Squad held his laptop for 3 weeks to do the 5 minute task of replacing the hard drive. They did not give him back a working machine. They did absolutely no data recovery and since they did not give him back his old hard drive, he lost all of his data. Basically, the only upside to the situation is that since his laptop is under warranty, he didn't have to pay the outlandish prices that they charge.
